Openings: “Flourish” @ Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum

Over the weekend, the Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum in Arizona hosted the opening of Flourish, a group show curated by Thinkspace Gallery. Over 100 artists contributed to the exhibition but the standouts for us were the murals from Esao Andrews and Nosego as well as a sweet hanging installation from Felipe Pantone. Previews: KAWS – “FAR FAR DOWN” @ Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis

Today at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, KAWS will be continuing his bevy of museum exhibitions with a new showing entitled FAR FAR DOWN. The Brooklyn-based artist has prepared a mural of his snoopy inspired black & white abstractions on CAM’s 60-foot long Project Wall, with the the work serving as a backdrop for three new paintings. Last month, the Fort Wayne Museum of Art (in association with Thinkspace Gallery) hosted the opening of Robert Williams’ Midwestern debut. Along with some new works, the exhibition introduced to fans in Indiana many of the pieces that others have enjoyed in Los Angeles (covered), Sonoma County, and Santa Fe, (shows which were also entitled SLANG Aesthetics!) The Fort Wayne Museum of Art (in association with Thinkspace Gallery) will be presenting Robert Williams’ SLANG Aesthetics! starting on April 22nd. Although there will be new works, the comprehensive exhibition follows similar showings in Los Angeles (covered), Sonoma County, and Santa Fe that also includes drawings and a series of large-scale sculptures and of course oil paintings. On the 22nd of February, Urban Nation Museum for Urban Contemporary Art in Berlin hosted a Secret Dinner event for friends, supporters, contributors and artists participating in their ongoing programs. Around 100 guests from around the globe attended the event organized by the museum director Yasha Young and Berliner Leben, a non-profit foundation that initiated the UN project in 2013. Showing in associated POW! WOW! Hawaii through the tomorrow at the Honolulu Museum of Art School is the 4th annual Exploring The New Contemporary Movement group exhibition (see 2016 & 2015 & 2014) curated by Thinkspace. Artists were asked to contribute 12 x 12″ pieces leading to a visually conforming display of works. Rounding things out was a showcase for Shok-1 (seen below) and a Homer Simpson x Banksy parody installation by Oak Oak (seen above). This Sunday, POW! WOW! Hawaii (more info here) kicks off with a re-occurring show curated by Thinkspace at the Honolulu Museum of Art School entitled Exploring The New Contemporary Movement (see 2016 & 2015 & 2014). As in the past, the format is 12 x 12″ works, leading to a visually congruent display of artworks, some of which were inspired by island life. Oak Oak will also be presenting an installation as part of the exhibition and Shok-1 will be the featured artist. Previews: Jose Parla – “Roots” @ SCAD Museum

As we mentioned when we covered Jose Parla’s show at YoungArts during Basel Week Miami, the work was going to travel to the SCAD Museum of Art in 2017. That exhibition, entitled Roots, opened today in Georgia at the Savannah College of Art and Design with works ranging from mid-sized canvases and sculptures to large-scale paintings. The Cuban-American artist has created a series of work that represent everything from Cuba’s history to his personal memories and experiences while utilizing his signature textures, urban calligraphy, and palette.
