Upcoming: Swoon – “Thalassa” @ Detroit Institute of Arts

Starting on September 24th, the Detroit Institute of Arts will unveil an installation from Swoon (interviewed) entitled Thalassa. The 20-foot tall, 400-pound sculptural piece named after the Greek goddess of the sea – originally displayed in New Orleans (covered) – will be adapted for DIA’s Great Hall. The massive work from the American artist will be suspended from the ceiling and will coincide with a mural project in Detroit’s Jefferson-Chalmers district. After the first showing of Slang Aesthetics! in Los Angeles (covered), the traveling retrospective of Robert Williams’ career has since made a stop in June of last year at the Art Museum of Sonoma County. Upcoming: KAWS – “Where The End Starts” @ Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth

Starting on October 20th, a major survey exhibition of the work of KAWS will be opening at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. A followup to his 2011 show at The Modern (covered), Where The End Starts will feature “key paintings, sculptures, drawings, toys, and street art interventions” that will give a complete review of the Brooklyn-based artist’s 20 year career. On June 23rd, Museo De Las Americas in Denver, Colorado, opened the first US museum solo show by Saner (Edgar Flores). Releases: Liu Bolin – “Hidden in the City: the Louvre Pyramid (with JR)” Print

In May, we shared with you the amazing takeover by JR (interviewed) at the famous Louvre in Paris where he pasted over the iconic pyramid using photographs of the surrounding structures. Looking at the right angle, it appeared that the pyramid in the main courtyard “disappears” from sight.
