Previews: Thomas Campbell – “Ampersand” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Next Thursday (June 12th), Joshua Liner Gallery in New York will be opening a show from Thomas Campbell, his first with the gallery. Featuring painting, sculpture, original bronzes, and hand sewn works, Ampersand will let the California-based artist further explore the use of the gourd and its symbolism throughout his visual language. He states: “I feel there is a natural correlation between what I do and what I draw, [my drawings have] similar lines to the structure of gourds. I have been really drawn to them […]

Showing: Lucien Smith – “Tigris” @ Skarstedt Gallery

Currently at the Upper East Side location (20 East 79th Street) of Skarstedt Gallery in New York, a new body of work from Lucien Smith is on display through June 27th. Collectively entitled Tigris, the 11 large-scale paintings are part of a new series of paintings inspired by on of the first work of art that he can recall, Hokusai’s The Great Wave off Kanagawa, an image of which hung in the wall of his classroom. The title reflects both the ancient body of water, and […]

Openings: Ryan McGinness – “Figure Drawings” @ Pace Prints

Ryan McGinness is back at Pace Prints after a seven year hiatus, but to say he’s been busy since would be an understatement. The New York-based artist, whose work stems primarily from skate and design culture has gone on to massive acclaim in that seven year stint, from further exploring his skate influences with the MOMA to his explosive show in the last days of Deitch Projects and let’s not forget all the projects in between. His latest solo show, humbly titled Figure Drawing, is way beyond just that, and without question continues to […]

Interviews: Lori Earley – “The Devil’s Pantomime” @ Opera Gallery (New York)

The Opera Gallery in New York is set to open a solo show from Lori Earley on June 7th marking her successful return after a long hiatus. Entitled The Devil’s Pantomime, her largest exhibition to date featuring 34 new paintings comprises of surreal portraits of her characteristic females. We talk to her about a reason why her women may look the way they do, her struggles with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, and more in the interview below. Check out the Q&A’s as well as preview images and make plans to […]

Openings: “Art Truancy – Celebrating 20 Years of Juxtapoz Magazine” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

The year was 1994, Pulp Fiction was ruling the box office, The Beastie Boys were blasting Sabotage and a group of artists out in sunny California were brainstorming on how to start a Kustom Kulture magazine, that (unbeknownst to them) would eventually go on to be the most widely distributed and influential art magazine in the world. Famed painter Robert Williams (originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico) was riding a California wave, while collaborator, Fausto Vitello, was ripping with his Thrasher Magazine success, and with some key […]

Streets: COPE2 – Bowery & Houston Mural

Last week, the iconic corner of Bowery & Houston in New York saw a new mural take shape as COPE2 took over the location. Featuring his well known bubble tags and associated graf elements, the wall was soon filled with letterings from the NYC writer on a richly textured background. Stop by to see the colorful mural for yourself if you are in the area and also take a look at more photos below… Photo credit: Joe Russo for Arrested Motion. Discuss COPE2 here.

Openings: Walton Ford – “Watercolors” @ Paul Kasmin

The last time we were able to experience Walton Ford’s work in person in New York was in 2011 when he blew us away with his surreal portraits of King Kong as well as his well known naturalistic paintings. This time around, the American artist’s return to Paul Kasmin Gallery featured large scale watercolors of his chosen creatures in unusual and and ironically unnatural urban and outdoor settings. As per his usual practice, the pieces were embellished with notes, but for the first time included musings from the […]

Frieze Week NYC ’14: Frieze Art Fair (Part 2)

Last week, we brought you a first look at some of the amazing works of art at this year’s Frieze New York. But an art fair such as Frieze contains too many notable pieces—such as Danh Vo’s installation Massive Black Hole in the Dark Heart of Our Milky Way (pictured above)—to be shown in just one post. So, we’ve returned with part 2, which includes images of works by Yayoi Kusama, Ed Ruscha, George Condo, Jonas Wood and Jeff Elrod, among many others. Discuss Frieze […]

Openings: Ai Yamaguchi – “Shinchishirin” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

As it had been 12 years since Ai Yamaguchi’s last solo exhibition in New York City, the level of expectation and excitement for her return was understandably high. Even so, Shinchishirin at the Joshua Liner Gallery, which opened May 8th, far exceeds those high expectations, and is arguably one of the artist’s finest bodies of work to date. The imagery in the show is instantly recognizable as Yamaguchi, with her characteristic Edo-era courtesans depicted in a style which is at once based in traditional Japanese […]

Frieze Week NYC ’14: PULSE

Once considered a top satellite fair for emerging to mid-career artists, PULSE lost some of that reputation in recent years, as many of its exhibitors jumped ship to other competing fairs. However, at the beginning of 2014, PULSE took on a new director tasked with bringing it back to its former status. And the difference was somewhat visible last week, as PULSE New York emerged with a smaller, more highly curated show. Amongst the booths, there were a few standouts worth mentioning, such as works […]
