The Dutch Culture USA program by the Consulate General of the Netherlands in New York and the 250 Wynwood development team joined their efforts and organized the Caleidoscoop event during Art Basel Week in Miami. We lead off this week’s review of street art with a new mural from Roa in Puerto Rico. Painted for the Los Muros Hablan Festival, the Belgium-based muralist rendered a giant Iguana (an invasive pest there, chewing up plants and crops and burrowing under roads and dikes) holding a Coquí, a small frog endemic to the island. Openings: Niels Shoe Meulman – “Justified Scriptures” @ 941 Geary

Last Saturday evening, Amsterdam-based artist Niels Shoe Meulman’s (NSM) exhibition Justified Scriptures opened at 941 Geary. The works in the show meshes his “calligraffiti” with repetition and abstract elements, to create what he describes as “Abstract Expressionism with a calligraphic origin.” This exhibition reflects the road he has traveled as an artist – starting out with being a graffiti legend 80’s, to later becoming a designer/typographer who eventually starts a design company and then gets into advertising.
