POW WOW ’11: Suitman

One of the highlights of our trip to Hawaii for POW WOW ’11 was spending some time with Young Kim. The performance artist, photographer, designer, creative director, and videographer has worked with many the major brands out there. His famous alterego – Suitman – is the physical representation of his cultural alienation and acceptance issues as he has lived and worked in many places since childhood. With a long line of people waiting to be photographed for one of his personal projects in the signature […]

Video: JR – “The Wrinkles of the City”

Filmed and edited in his signature style, this The Wrinkles of the City video documents JR’s recent project in Shanghai which included an exhibition (covered) and street work (covered). With the general release of his acclaimed Women Are Heroes documentary set for this week in his home country, although not in the film, this footage should only excite the French street photographer’s fans even more before the worldwide release. Finding Vivian Maier: Chicago Street Photographer is the first American exhibition of photographs by Vivian Maier (1926 – 2009). It opens Friday, 7 January at the Chicago Cultural Center and runs until Sunday, 3 April. The enigmatic, private yet outspoken Maier and the great story behind the recent discovery of her work by a former estate agent at an auction house in Chicago has certainly generated a buzz, both within the photography world and beyond. Maier was a Chicago nanny who took more than 100,000 […]

Streets: Merry Christmas from Slinkachu

More Christmas greetings come from street miniature photographer Slinkachu. This piece in London entitled Maz + Joe is a twist on the usual story this time of year with Mary riding something other than a Donkey, but it looks like all the places to sleep are still full. Hopefully, they’ll be able to find a manger to keep warm and deliver their bundle of joy. Another view after the jump…

Merry Christmas from Marilyn Minter

Marilyn Minter, who we just saw at the opening of the Youtube Biennial at the Guggenheim where she was a judge, recently released a 58 x 48 inch vinyl diecut Christmas tree wall-sticker.  The Merry Merry Tree kit features some of Minter’s own eclectic collection of shiny ornaments with the topping star using some of her more classic photo-imagery (seen in detail after the jump). The tree and star are priced at $125 or only the star for $10 all available here with some of […]
