Releases: JR Print

French photographer and artist JR will be releasing a new lithograph print via Social-Animals.net on Tuesday, the 9th of December. The lithograph was produced at Idem Studio in Paris, and features one of the images taken during his recent Women Are Heroes project in Port of Le Havre, France (covered). Building on his successful collaboration with the NYC ballet earlier this year (covered), the print shows a ballerina sitting in a stack of iron containers. Charlotte Ranson, from the Ballet de l’Opéra de Paris, featured on this image, […]

Showing: Quam Odunsi – “Distinction Without a Difference” @ Design Matters Gallery

Open right now until Dec 19 in Los Angeles is Quam Odunsi’s third solo show with Design Matters Gallery. Exploring the logical fallacy of distinction without a difference, the artist utilizes original content taken on film cameras (35mm, 120mm, Polaroid) which is silkscreened onto canvas and paper; sculpture, which includes collaged Polaroid prints; and a eye-popping original short film shot on Super8, which is shown in the back room space of the gallery. A limited edition (of 18) print of the tricycle image has also […]

Preview: Quam Odunsi – “Distinction Without a Difference” @ Design Matters Gallery

Opening on the evening of Nov 20 in Los Angeles is Quam Odunsi’s third solo show with Design Matters Gallery. For this exhibition, the artist explores the logical fallacy of distinction without a difference. For those unfamiliar with the term, it occurs when “an author or speaker attempts to describe a distinction between two things, even though there is, in fact, no actual difference. It is particularly used when a word or phrase has connotations associated with it that one party to an argument prefers […]

Releases: Ed Templeton – “Wayward Cognitions” Book

Ed Templeton recently released his latest photography book titled Wayward Cognitions, published by Thomas Campbell’s Um Yeah Arts, showing 20 years worth of capturing street life in it’s purest, rawest form. The skateboarding legend, artist and photographer, whose books such as Teenage Smokers and Teenage Kissers influenced a whole generation of young photographers, this time published a book that isn’t capturing or  exploring a certain theme, but gives a good peek inside his extensive archives. Documenting the behind-the=scenes of skateboarding, alternative life styles, teenagers, general public, religious lunatics, homeless, drunks, and […]

JR – “Women Are Heroes” Container Ship

Over the weekend, JR (interviewed) launched a pretty special project from Port of Le Havre, France – a 365 meter long container ship, the CMA CGM MAGELLAN, pasted with his iconic eye motif. Working on over 151 containers, the French artist used them as pixels to recreate the eyes of Elizabeth, a Kenyan woman living in the Kibera slums, in Nairobi from his Women Are Heroes series of works. The vessel leaving the port will mark the end of this series that he started in 2007 (see below) and […]

Ryan McGinley : Happy Fourth of July!

As our readers in America get ready to celebrate the Fourth of July, here are some works from Ryan McGinley (who recently showed in Hong Kong) to start things off. Taken from his firework series of photographs, the combination of the sparklers and the human forms is one of his most iconic images. So, have a happy Independence Day and stay safe out there. Discuss Ryan McGinley here.

Openings: Futura – “Introspective” @ Magda Danysz (Paris)

Earlier this week, graffiti legend Futura created new work for a Paris show at Magda Danysz Gallery entitled Introspective. Drawing from many of the series of works that have defined his career, the NYC-based artist presented street influenced abstractions, figurative work featuring his pointman character, and paintings that included his famous atom motif. Rounding out the exhibition were a selection of manipulated photos similar to what fans have seen him post on his Instagram for a while now. Photo credit: Stéphane Bisseuil (opening shots) & Guillotine. Discuss […]

Openings: JR – “The Close Up” @ Magda Danysz (Shanghai)

During AM‘s recent trip we stopped by the streets of Shanghai to participate in the phenomenon that is the Inside / Out photobooth truck. Next to follow that up, we stopped by Magda Danysz to catch JR’s (interviewed) latest show. Entitled The Close Up, this exhibition marks the return of the French artist to the gallery’s Shanghai location after four years (see the first show here). The works range from his grand photographs taken from projects around the world to his wood impressions to his haunting eye pieces […]

Showing: Aurel Schmidt & Pierre Molinier @ M+B Gallery

Last week, AM stopped by M+B Gallery in Beverly Hills to check out the current show featuring work from Aurel Schmidt and the late Pierre Molinier. The unexpected pairing actually worked out quite nicely thematically combining Schmidt’s exquisite, twisted, and creative drawings of human anatomy with the French artist’s erotic photomontages. Head over before it closes on June 21st to see it yourself if you are in the Los Angeles area – it will be worth your time. Some installation shots via the gallery. Discuss Aurel Schmidt here.

Showing: JR Installation @ Panthéon (Paris)

It looks like the Inside / Out message from JR (interviewed) isn’t stopping anytime soon. We had just finished enjoying the street intervention in Shanghai ourselves (also see Time Square, Japan, Los Angeles & London, just to name of few) and now the French artist is back in his hometown for a massive installation at the Panthéon. Blending contemporary art, in this case JR’s photographs of people all from all over the world, with classical architecture always creates an intriguing combination (i.e.: KAWS at the PAFA & Murakami at Versailles).
