Previews: Herakut – “Don’t Look At Me” @ Shooting Gallery

On Saturday night, November 9th, artistic duo Herakut will be opening a new show at the Shooting Gallery in San Francisco entitled Don’t Look At Me. The collaborative acrylic and spray paint works on canvas from Hera (interviewed) and Akut often exude a raw and emotionally charged feel to them and mirror the German artists’ creative output on the streets. Rounding out the show will be a 6 x 10 foot canvas suspended from the ceiling as well as a large-scale installation. Discuss this show here. Discuss Herakut […]

Previews: ‘Made in China’ @ Ian Ross Gallery

Made in China is a group show with a difference. Within it, you’ll see work from the likes of D Young V, Akira Beard, Jessica Hess (pictured above), Ernesto Yerena and Eddie Colla amongst others. You’ll also see counterfeit reproductions of the artworks presented alongside the original pieces. Curator Eddie Colla invited a group of artists to create a painting each and then sent photos of all the work to a Chinese factory to be reproduced by artists who make copies of Monets and Picassos […]

Ryan McGinley – “YEARBOOK” @ Ratio 3

For those who missed it, Ryan McGinley recently presented a new body of work at Ratio 3 in San Francisco, his third solo with the gallery. The photographs were arranged in a site-specific installation, featuring the NY-based artist’s first series of full-color studio portraiture. Hundreds of images were wheatpasted on the walls of the showspace, creating an immersive experience for viewers as they are bombarded with a visual constellation of faces and bodies. Discuss Ryan McGinley here.

Openings: Craww & Tatiana Suarez – ‘Through The Veil’ @ Spoke Art

Spoke Art’s latest exhibition opened on October 3rd in San Francisco. Through The Veil features the work of Miami based Tatiana Suarez and Sheffield, UK’s Craww. The pairing have shown together previously at the SF space, so this exhibition serves as a triumphal return / reunion of sorts for the artists, who both depict the female form in very different ways. Craww’s sinuous renderings are completed in oils – a transition he recently made, apparently with great success judging by the delicate works exhibited here – as are […]

Showing: Francesco Igory Deiana – “Free Fall” @ The Popular Workshop

The Popular Workshop in San Francisco opened The Fall, a solo show by Francesco Igory Deiana on the 27th of September. The Italian born artist created a new body of work continuing and evolving his imagery and concepts. Using wide range of different mediums and techniques, he prepared different kinds of pieces from smaller drawings, paintings, prints or photographs, to sculptures and large size installation. With this diversity and collage of different works, Deiana is trying to show that his work does and doesn’t have a strict […]

Previews: Lauren Napolitano – ‘A Well Marked Path’ @ Shooting Gallery

Next up at Shooting Gallery in SF is A Well-Marked Path, featuring new works by Oakland-based artist, Lauren Napolitano. Within this new body of work, expect an interesting installation from Napolitano, as her practice involves painting on found objects. Over 80 items are planned for the exhibition that will illustrate her influences – from traditional Mexican baskets and pottery to the deep-seated tradition of folk-art interspersed with a healthy nod toward the Mission-School aesthetic – all evident within her pattern based work. Antique porcelain dolls, hydroponic bulbs, antique bottles, […]

Streets: Os Gemeos x Mark Bode (San Francisco)

After Os Gemeos stopped by Los Angeles to promote their collaboration with Hennessy on a new bottle design, they headed up north to paint some public art in the Bay Area. One of the murals they got up was a joint effort with the San Fran-based Mark Bode. Featuring one of the twins signature yellow-skinned character riding Bode’s father’s Cheech Wizard, the piece can be seen on the back of the Warfield Theatre near 6th and Market Street. Check out some more progress shots below… Photo credit: Joe […]

Upcoming: Tiffany Bozic – “Sense of Wonder” @ FFDG

On October 18th, the Fecal Face Dot Gallery will be welcoming back (see 2008) Tiffany Bozic for a solo showing in The Mission in San Francisco. Drawing from her life-long love of nature, the Bay Area artist will be presenting a new body of work entitled Sense of Wonder. Bozic often adds surreal twists and turns to her vibrant portraiture of creatures in the wild, leading to imaginative compositions that startle the mind. We look forward to seeing what she has planned for this show, but for […]
