Preview: Kenny Scharf – “Kolors” @ Paul Kasmin

The Standard (Highline) in New York will be putting a new sculptural work from Kenny Scharf on display in the hotel’s plaza. Basel Week Miami ’12 / Upcoming: Yoskay Yamamoto Installation @ PULSE

Those visiting the PULSE fair next week in Miami will have to keep their eyes our for an installation from the Los Angeles-based Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed). Openings: Yue Minjun – “The Tao of Laughter” @ Harbour City – Part II (Hong Kong)

After bringing you photos of Yue Minjun’s showing of his new silkscreen works on display at Harbour City in Hong Kong, we head outside to check out the new sculptural installation. Displayed at the forecourt of Ocean Terminal, the five new sculptures that utilize his iconic “silly man” imagery and is inspired by inspired by Lao Zi’s 6th century classical text on Taoism known as Tao Te Ching. Previews: Yoshitomo Nara – “Doggy Radio”

Last year, while AM was in Hong Kong, we had a chance to visit HOW2WORK studios and preview their special collaboration with blue-chip Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara. Entitled Doggy Radio this unique project is a functional sculpture created by Nara and designed jointly between Sayers Studios & H2W. This beautiful limited edition artwork features Nara’s signature white dog (seen here), with the help of a specially placed “belly speaker” created by YAMAHA Lab, this lonesome puppy acts as a functional sound system. Openings: Bäst – “Germs Tropicana” @ Opera Gallery (NYC)

Last week, the Opera Gallery hosted an opening for a rare solo from Bäst at their New York location entitled Germs Tropicana. The show featured somewhat of a new direction for the Brooklyn-based street artist as he delivered pieces that were dense with his collage-style imagery, some of which were circular in nature. Teeming with his signature pop iconography, they resembled giant petri dishes – hence the title of the show. Installation: KAWS – “COMPANION (PASSING THROUGH)” @ Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth

It looks like KAWS is back in Texas for an encore after a successful showing there at the end of last year. If you remember, the Focus:KAWS exhibition was held at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth in December of 2011. Openings: Steven Harrington – “Insideout” @ Known Gallery

Currently showing at the Known Gallery in Los Angeles through this weekend are the works of Steven Harrington. Insideout is the first exhibition held in his hometown of Los Angeles since 2009 from the artist and designer, also known for co-founding both the design agency National Forest and pop-art brand You&I. The new body of work consists of a collection of drawings, paintings, prints, and sculptures (including his biggest ever – seen above) that reflect Harrington’s artistic journey of discovery and his desire to share it with others. Next month, starting on September 20th, Yue Minjun will be opening his first ever Hong Kong exhibition at Harbour City (site of the KAWS’ Passing Through exhibition in 2009).
