Last week we introduced to you The Crystal Ship festival that just took off on the streets of Ostend in Belgium. The second edition of the event produced an impressive selection of fresh public pieces, showing the consistent and recognizable curatorial efforts with very few exceptions. Recently in the Little Osaka area in Los Angeles, James Jean (interviewed) unveiled a billboard he sponsored with his artwork in honor of an area where he has frequented for food and inspiration. Revisiting their installation (covered) from 2012 in the Favela of Vila Brasilandia, at the north of Sao Paulo, Boa Mistura returned to update the project. Entitled Luz Nas Vielas, the undertaking saw the collective paint a series of words and colors through their signature use of anamorphosis in the alleyways of the favela. Streets: Hula – “Maka’u” (Hawaii)

Continuing his series of works in hard to reach locations, Hula recently painted a mural on the edge of a waterfall entitled Maka’u. Dealing with issues of fear, as suggested by the title, on multiple levels, the piece saw the Oahu-raised artist otherwise known as Sean Yoro suspend himself on the edge of a waterway on surfboard as he took risks to paint an image of a person hanging on by a rope. Streets: Nychos (Melbourne)

Recently in Melbourne, Nychos got up big with a new mural on Easey Street in Collingwood entitled Anatomy of a Kangaroo and painted in his signature dissected style. Making good use of his time, the Austrian artist will also be opening a show on March 10th at Juddy Roller entitled Monochrome Organism as well as unveiling a sculpture project, The Dissection of Sigmund Freud. After showing you some in-progress shots and some sneak peeks of the massive amount of work in progress on the streets of Kakaako, we now have a recap of many of the walls and public interventions that were created for POW! WOW! Hawaii. This year’s event had locations that were more compact and centrally located, leading to a more easily navigated set of murals. Continued good weather made for good painting conditions (albeit a little on the sunnier side) as POW! WOW! Hawaii draws closer to conclusion. When the call comes from POW! WOW! Hawaii for an artist to join the festivities, oftentimes it doesn’t take long for them to say YES! Streets: RETNA // The Beauty Project (Mexico City)

Recently in Mexico City, RETNA (featured) was invited in to create public art for The Beauty Project México. Painting his distinct script at the Cuauhtemoc building in the Tlatelolco neighborhood, the Los Angeles-based writer spent a few days working on the 21 story twin structures, his tallest intervention to date. Other artist who will be joining the project in the upcoming weeks include Alexis CILER, Olivia Steele, Saner, AEC (Interesni Kazki), Ericailcane and others. Discuss RETNA here. Recently at the MOCA in Los Angeles, a large-scale vinyl reproduction of Jonas Wood’s imagery was put up on the museum’s 5,400 square-foot facade. Rearranging segments of his watercolor painting Still Life With Two Owls from 2014, the mural introduces passerby’s to common elements of the locally-based artist’s modern takes on still lifes – plants, ceramics, collage-like compositions.
