Previews: Eric Joyner – “Sweet Dominion” @ Corey Helford Gallery

On February 20th, robots and donuts will be making their appearance in scores at the Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles. They are of course the favorite subjects of Eric Joyner’s (interviewed) whimsical paintings and will be again for his new body of work entitled Sweet Dominion. LA Art Show ’16 // Previews: Copro Gallery

Showing: Marcel Dzama & Raymond Pettibon – “Forgetting the Hand” @ David Zwirner Gallery

Currently at the 533 West 19th Street location of David Zwirner in New York, collaborative works collectively entitled Forgetting the Hand by Marcel Dzama and Raymond Pettibon are on display. This is the first time the two locally-based artists have worked together and their modified exquisite corpse technique of swapping a series of drawings to work on where part of what the other person did is concealed leads to some interesting results. Showing: Gris1 – “Mixité Sociale” @ Galerie Artistik Rezo

Gris1, a member of the infamous DMV crew from France, recently opened his Mixité Sociale solo at Galerie Artistik Rezo in Paris on the 13th of January. The show includes an elaborate installation created in the gallery space, along with several large canvases, ink drawings on paper, and limited edition lithographs. Showing: Paper Party 3 @ “Galerie Le Feuvre”

On January 14th, Galerie Le Feuvre in Paris opened the 3rd edition of the annual Paper Party group show. Their first exhibition of the year features the same concept they started a few years ago, showing five artists represented by the gallery – Mist, Paul Insect, Ella & Pitr, Pixel Pancho and Daniel Muñoz – San. Openings: Shag – “Jungle Drums” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Last week in Los Angeles, Shag (interviewed) brought a little retro chic to the new Corey Helford Gallery location with his latest solo entitled Jungle Drums. Along with his signature paintings featuring a nostalgic look back when mod characters hung out sipping martinis, the downtown LA showspace also featured tiki sculptures, a mid-century decor, as well as a large wall covered with his imagery. Upcoming: Amy Sol – “Garden Gamine” @ Thinkspace Gallery

The last solo we had the opportunity of attending from Amy Sol (interviewed) in Los Angeles was back in 2013 (covered), so it was nice to hear she will be presenting some new works at Thinkspace Gallery soon. Entitled Garden Gamine, the set of fresh paintings will continue the Nevada-based artist’s series of delicate portraitures featuring her feminine subjects and their animal friends. An example of this can be seen above, but plan to be there for the opening on April 2nd to seen the rest. Discuss Amy Sol here.

Upcoming: Erik Jones @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

After a showing at the end of last year in Italy (covered), Erik Jones has already started to work on a new series of paintings. The new batch of originals are destined for an exhibition closer to home for the Brooklyn-based artist at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery in April, his first with the Chelsea showspace. As you can see, he will be presenting more of his vibrant portraiture, infused with abstract forms that could be said to represent geometric high-end fashion. Discuss Erik Jones here.

Previews: KAWS @ Yorkshire Sculpture Park

Three weeks before the official opening on the 6th of February, the historically designed landscape of Yorkshire Sculpture Park turned into sort of a construction site last weekend. With large trucks, cranes and other heavy machinery in place, the setup of the first UK museum exhibition by KAWS has begun. Different body parts, Mickey-like gloves and shoes with signature X’s on them were carefully assembled by the team that was installing the showing from the NY-based artist. Showing: Lumiere London Festival 2016

During four evenings from the 14th-17th of January, experience installations from the world’s most exciting artists working with light at across 30 locations in the UK capital for the Lumiere London Festival. Architectural landmarks are being coloured with 3D projections like Westminster Abbey by Patrice Warrener. Trafalgar Square fountains are transformed into Plastic Islands’\ by activist group Luzinterruptus. In  shop windows, shimmering dresses by Taegon KIM change colours with their fibre-optic LEDs, giving them a Cinderella-esque touch.
