Coming up on January 9th, James “Dalek” Marshall (interviewed) will be opening a new solo at the 529 West 20th Street location of Jonathan LeVine Gallery. Entitled The Redistribution Of Destruction, the fresh batch of work seems to continue his ever more complex abstractions and exploration of geometric patterns. Openings: “Major Work” @ Chandran Gallery

Earlier this month, Chandran Gallery in San Francisco opened a show curated by Andrew Schoultz entitled Major Work. The locally-based artist carefully selected a roster of participants that included himself, Alicia McCarthy, Aaron Noble, Kelsey Brookes, Revok, James Marshall (Dalek), Sam Friedman, Eric Yahnker, Mark Dean Veca, Saber, Hilary Pecis, Tim Biskup, Eric White, and Allison Schulnik. The premise behind the exhibition was for each artist to contribute a large-scale piece that they felt capture the essence of their work. The resulting show was quite stunning, as evidenced by […]

Openings: Erik Parker – “Undertow” @ Paul Kasmin Gallery

A couple weeks ago, the 297 Tenth Avenue location of Paul Kasmin Gallery in New York hosted the opening reception for Undertow, Erik Parker’s new solo show. Drawing from a wide range of influences, the locally-based artist arranges these elements into complex compositions that become greater than the sum of its parts. The highly saturated palette as well as shaped canvases further accent his imagery, a commentary on the “world’s current political, social, and economic landscapes.” Discuss Erik Parker here.

Upcoming: KAWS @ Yorkshire Sculpture Park

From the 6th of February until the 12th of June 2016, Yorkshire Sculpture Park will be hosting the first UK museum exhibition by KAWS. The show will include new large, bright, graphic canvases at their expansive Longside Gallery and a series of monumental companion sculptures which will be exhibited around the historically designed landscape of YSP. The NYC-based artist recently visited a factory in Maastricht, The Netherlands, where his towering wooden sculptures are being produced. Teaser shots from his Instagram look very promising so this might be the right time for fans to […]

Upcoming: Tauba Auerbach – “Projective Instrument” @ Paula Cooper Gallery

Kicking off the art year for 2016 is the highly anticipated return of Tauba Auerbach to the gallery scene after a hiatus of four years. She talks about the reasons behind her break in a nice interview with SFAQ, (so you can check that out) and used the time off to create Diagonal Press. Projective Instrument opens at Paula Cooper in New York on January 9th and will feature “glass sculptures, 3D printed sculptures, new paintings, weavings, a library and a small series of concerts by […]

Showing: Jan Kalab – “Tension” @ BC Gallery

As we previously reported, BC Gallery in Berlin is currently hosting a solo by Jan Kalab (interviewed) which features a new series of round canvases and a large sculptural piece. Here is the followup with photos from the exhibition entitled Tension, which will stay on view until the 23rd of January. With a title referencing the structure of the works presented, the show includes works from the Czech artist’s most successful series. These minimalist pieces that experiment with the border line between geometrically perfect and organically unpredictable have been getting […]

Openings: Etam Cru – “Galimatias” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Last Saturday, Thinkspace Gallery opened the long awaited LA debut of the Polish street art duo, Etam Cru. Entitled Galimatias, the new body of work from Bezt & Sainer consists of canvas, linen, wood and paper pieces painted with acrylic, graphite, ink, and spraypaint. A full house and an abundance of red dots proved the anticipation of this show was well deserved. The title of the show comes French word for “gibberish” or “nonsense.” This relates to artists’ tendency to create works that carry no deeper meaning or symbolism, made strictly for their aesthetic value and left to […]

Streets: Ino (Fortaleza)

Fortaleza in Brazil recently hosted the second edition of Festival Concreto, an urban and street art festival. As one of the 70+ international and local artists, Ino created the biggest piece of the event titled Heaven and Hell on Earth. The Greek muralist worked on a 40m high building located in the heart of the city, producing the biggest mural in the whole of Fortaleza. Through his recognizable visual language based on the use of fat caps, he painted an image of a kid sitting on earth and sending […]

Showing: Mark Ryden – “Dodecahedron” @ Paul Kasmin Gallery

Last week, the Paul Kasmin Gallery (293 Tenth Avenue location) unveiled a new solo from Mark Ryden featuring his first-ever bronze sculpture, eight new paintings, drawings, color studies, and a new porcelain edition. As he mentioned in our recent interview, the theme of his exhibition could be described as “the soul confronting its physical form,” with the Dodecahedron symbolizing a bridge between the physical world and the intangible realm. Stop by for a look if you can, the new works are exquisite, especially his largest painting to date (seen above). Discuss this show here. […]
