Openings: Faile x BÄST – “Deluxx Fluxx Arcade” @ Brooklyn Museum

After sharing photos from the Savage/Sacred Young Minds showing at the Brooklyn Museum with you last week, we now have an additional look at the arcade installation there from Faile (featured) and their long time collaborator Bast. After previous iterations seen in places like New York, Miami, Scotland, and London, this immersive experience finally makes an appearance in museum form. Consisting of video games, pinball machines, and foosball tables, the entire interactive environment with signatures imagery are designed by the artists down to the actual games. Discuss Faile here.

Openings: FAILE – “Savage/Sacred Young Minds” @ Brooklyn Museum

Last month, the Brooklyn Museum welcomed in the locally based duo Faile (featured) for a solo show entitled Savage/Sacred Young Minds. The exhibition showed off a wide range of works from the Patrick’s including their  Temple project that first made its appearance for PortugalArte ‘10, prayer wheels, large scale paintings, and more pieces all influenced by “a wide variety of sources, including American quilts, folk and Native American art, religious architecture, pulp magazines, comic books, sci-fi movie posters, adult entertainment advertisements, and storefront typography.” Included was also a revival of the Deluxx Fluxx Arcade (more on this […]

Recap: Edwin Ushiro – “The Study of Life as Things” @ Giant Robot 2

We stopped Giant Robot 2 in Los Angeles earlier this week to see the solo from Edwin Ushiro (interviewed) who had a wonderful series of drawings on display made from ballpoint pen, markers, pens, color pencils and graphite. Perhaps it’s the translucent paper used for these new pieces, but the translucent and ethereal look draws the viewer in for a second look to try and decipher how the Los Angeles-based artist achieves the effect. This transparency and glowing look would have been familiar to fans of his larger paintings, a […]

Upcoming: Revok – “Revok” @ Ruttkowski;68

On August 14th, Ruttkowski;68 in Cologne, Germany will be welcoming back Jason William aka REVOK for another solo. The eponymously named exhibition continues the line of work seen in his Los Angeles show earlier this year (covered), and will follow the graffiti artist as he “goes beyond the self to examine perceptions of consciousness and unconsciousness.” This continues to be expressed in the form of increasingly complex assemblages formed from precisely cut pieces of wood that draw their influences from op-art, traditional folk pattern, and optical illusion elements. Discuss Revok […]

Showing: Axel Void – “Sehnsucht” @ BC Gallery

Currently at BC Gallery in Berlin, Axel Void has a series of provocative works on display entitled Sehnsucht. The solo show from the Miami-based artist consists mainly of small and large paintings featuring portraits of people with plastic wrapped around their heads as well as some videos (sample here). The idea of the exhibition is to explore the idea of mundanity and the pursuit of purpose in our life, also referenced by the title of the show which comes from the German noun translated as longing, yearning, or craving or in a wider sense […]

Streets / Recap: Public Art Horsens (Denmark)

Recently, the Danish city of Horsens was blessed with some new public art from C215, Andrea Wan, Ilse Weisfelt & Joren Joshua (seen above), Chifumi and Scott Cooper. The international cast of artists was brought together by ArtRebels for Public Art Horsens, which provided an opportunity for some of the artists who have not painted in such a large format before. Take a look at some photos of the process as well as completed pieces below… Photo credit: Henrik Haven.

Upcoming: Cleon Peterson – “Poison” @ Library Street Collective

Provocative painter Cleon Peterson has worked with the Library Street Collective before like during last year’s Art Basel Week in Miami (covered). Their new collaborative effort, a show entitled Poison, will be opening on August 29 at the LSC gallery space in Detroit and will no doubt feature more powerful and barbaric imagery from the former assistant to Shepard Fairey, drawing from his experiences and dark past. Discuss this show here. Discuss Cleon Peterson here.

Openings: Josh Keyes & Brin Levinson – “Reclamation of Nowhere” @ Antler Gallery

Last week, Josh Keyes (interviewed) returned to the Antler Gallery for a joint showing with Brin Levinson entitled Reclamation of Nowhere. Their imagery meshed nicely together with Keyes’ creatures interacting with what may be a post-apocalyptic urban landscape and Levinson working with the same nature versus man themes but with a different atmosphere. The show runs through the 26th of this month for those in Portland who want to stop by themselves for a look. Discuss Josh Keyes here.
