Baby Tattooville ’14: Art Jam!

Bringing together 14 accomplished and sought after artists in the lowbrow art world is not easily done, and a feat worth noting all on its own. But having those artists collaborate on a single piece of art, creating it in a day and a half, then have prints signed and distributed all within a weekend is nothing short of miraculous. AM was on hand to catch the entire process, from the blank canvas to the last ten minutes when the piece was laid flat to allow […]

Showing: Yoskay Yamamoto – “Rainy Day with a Chance of Sun” @ Hellion Gallery

Last week, Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed) opened a solo at the Hellion Gallery in Portland entitled Rainy Day with a Chance of Sun. After seeing some studio shots of some of the small originals and sculptural pieces he was working on, it was nice to finally visualize how the LA-based artist assembled and clustered them together. Take a  look at more installation shots of fresh work below… Discuss Yoskay Yamamoto here.

Showing: Sam Falls @ Hannah Hoffman Gallery

Now showing through October 25th at the Hannah Hoffman Gallery in Los Angeles is a new body of work from Sam Falls, whose sculptural pieces were also recently displayed MetroTech Center in Brooklyn (covered). What interests fans of this young LA-based artist with a rising star is not just the imagery he produces but his methodology behind it. For these new “paintings,” Falls gathered vegetation from his current house in Venice (palm fronds, birds of paradise), his childhood home in Vermont (ferns), and the woods around his other residence in […]

Streets: Liqen, Don John, Fintan Magee, Interesni Kazki, Jaz, Alexis Diaz for WE AArt (Part II)

Last month, we brought you a look at the murals Aryz, Escif, and Kenor, painted for the WE AArt festival in Aalborg, Denmark. There were other artists who filled out the roster for this phase of the project that will be ongoing for the next several years including Liqen (seen above), Don John, Fintan Magee, Interesni Kazki, Jaz, and Alexis Diaz. Here is a look at their contributions… Photo credit: Henrik Haven.

Openings: Carl Krull – “Seismic” @ V1 Gallery

After a studio visit with Carl Krull, it was gratifying to see his new works displayed on the walls of V1 Gallery last week. Creating his imagery through a pattern of repetitive lines, the fresh pieces were collectively entitled Seismic and sometimes formed faces almost looking like pin art or other more complex compositions. Head over for a look if you are in around Copenhagen through October 25. Photo credit: Henrik Haven. Discuss Carl Krull here.

Previews: Travis Louie – “Strange Visitors” @ AFA (New York)

On October 17th, the New York location of AFA will be hosting new works from Travis Louie (interviewed) entitled Strange Visitors. The showing continues the painter’s fascination with the look of vintage photographs as well as imaginary creatures, and his amazing melding of the two disparate interests leading to impossibly realistic looking “shots” of otherworldly characters. Further described in Louie’s own words – “This show features paintings of goblins who change their appearance to sneak up on us, faeries who are imagined by children who don’t want […]

Showing: Matzu / Tomokazu Matsuyama – “Outside Looking In” @ Lesley Kehoe Galleries

After a recent landmark showcase at Harbour City in Hong Kong (covered), Tomokazu Matsuyama (interviewed) headed to Melbourne for his next project. Outside Looking In at Lesley Kehoe Galleries is the second exhibition in their Spring Series focusing on Japanese artists living and creating in New York, making Matzu a perfect choice, especially when considering the East meets West nature of his work. The show, which runs through October 25th, features a selection of Matsuyama’s colorful and kinetic paintings as well as sculptural works which demonstrate nicely his signature aesthetic of putting a […]

Studio Visits: Jonas Lund – Studio Practice” @ Boetzelaer|Nispen

We had the chance to visit Jonas Lund’s Studio Practice project at Boetzelaer|Nispen in Amsterdam on the last day of the production process. By now, the “white cube” gallery space got a full art studio makeover with paint marks and scars of art making on every wall and surface. The works produced are scattered around the space, some hanging as the accepted ones, some marked as denied, and some still waiting for evaluation by the advisory board members. We’ve also got to have a look into a 300 pages book […]

Baby Tattooville ’14: Late Night Live Painting With Rick O’Brien

Burning the midnight oil, surprise guest Rick O’Brien invited us in to see some live model painting at Baby Tattooville last night. Working his two subjects through different poses, the portrait painter loosely laid forms onto his canvas as attendees watched. Taking into account the lateness of the hour, the rumored haunted nature of this particular room at the top of the Mission Inn, and the costumed nature of the models, the session was certainly something to remember from this year’s event. See full coverage of this […]

Baby Tattooville ’14: Live Screen Printing With Tara McPherson

Another highlight of the 8th annual Baby Tattooville is the live screen printing event with Tara McPherson and Andy Diesel from Diesel Prints. The prints will be part of the gift bag that all of the attendees will receive along with offerings from other artists. Take a look at more photos below of McPherson and Diesel in action… See full coverage of this year’s event here. Discuss Baby Tattooville here.
