Openings: Jacub Gagnon – “World’s Collide” @ Thinkspace

Last weekend, AM stopped by Thinkspace to check out the almost sold-out solo from Jacub Gagnon (interviewed) entitled World’s Collide. Painted against a black background, the surreal portraits of his chosen creatures really pop and seem even more vivid. Full of whimsy and imaginative touches, you can see the Toronto-based artist thought carefully about each element of the pieces, from title to composition. Take a look at more photos from the opening below. Discuss this show here. Discuss Jacub Gagnon here.

Openings: Israel Lund – “Israel Lund” @ David Lewis Gallery

AM recently attended the much anticipated opening for Israel Lund at Lower East Side’s David Lewis Gallery. The eponymously named solo includes both his signature silkscreened canvas paintings along with a new series of sculptures which center around one of his core tools – the silkscreen. As the title suggests, this is Israel Lund presenting his take on Israel Lund, but unlike self-titled shows that we’ve experienced in the past, this exhibition seems to be the artist conducting an impression of himself. From his enlarged silkscreens […]

Openings: Kazuki Takamatsu – “Spiral of Emotions” @ CHG Circa

Over the weekend, art fans in Los Angeles saw the return of Kazuki Takamatsu and his gradient map textured portaiture in a new show entitled Spiral of Emotions. Exhibiting at CHG Circa (see 2013 at the sister gallery), the Japanese artist brought with him a new set of glowing paintings featuring ghostly silhouettes of children and adolescents, often intermingled with symbols of death and violence. This apparent contradiction between innocence and darker elements gives the work an added layer of complexity. These paintings are best viewed […]
