Like last year, the annual exhibition dedicated to cult movies will be opening in a pop-up space in New York as the LA-based Gallery 1988 brings one of their most popular shows again to the Big Apple. As we continue our survey of Art Basel Week in Miami, we turn our eyes to Art Miami and its sister fair CONTEXT. The combined exhibition space of the two events featured over 190 galleries and covered over 200,000 square feet. Strolling through the booths, we found artist new and old that drew our attention. Basel Week Miami ’13 / Streets: “Women on the Walls” (Wynwood) – Part II

Following up on some of the walls in-progress that we showed you last week for the Women on the Walls in Miami for Art Basel Week, we now have photos of some of the completed murals and work. The surrounding area and the Wynwood Walls compound were beautified by visiting artists including Aiko, Miss Van, Fafi, Maya Hayuk, Lady Pink, Faith47, Kashink, Lakwena, Sheryo and Olek (seen above). While most were focused on the art bonanza in Miami, Roq La Rue favorites John Brophy and Femke Hiemstra, shared an open with new works at the Seattle gallery. John Brophy continues to hone his craft, mixing science symbology with religious iconography in Breaking The Spell. Added to the mix this time around are a few individual themes, like the world’s water supply in Oasis, and the companies that produce supergerms, which are literally slapped across a mesmerizing face in Birth of the Gram-Negative Venus. Danish street artist, HuskMitNavn, reacently teamed up with Spain-based Canadian artist Michael Swaney for their first collaborative show, The Hanging, that opened at Ruttkowski;68 gallery in Cologne, Germany on the 6th of December. One of the long-time satellite fairs we always check out during Art Basel Week in Miami is Pulse. As in previous years, the fair was held at The Ice Palace, just south of Wynwood, and consisted of a wide range of domestic and international galleries, including New Image Art, Martha Otero, Yancey Richardson and Mixed Greens. Another interesting exhibition that occured during Art Basel Week was entitled Most Oddinism located at The Rotunda, just a block from a number of fairs such as Miami Projects, Art Miami & Context in Miami’s Downtown district. This group show featured the works by many familiar artists you’ve seen here at AM including Aaron De La Cruz, Christopher Derek Bruno, Ben Eine, Kenji Hirata Anthony Lister, Otto Zitko, Patrick Martinez (seen above), ESPO and Roid.
