Basel Week Miami ’12 / Preview: Joshua Liner Gallery @ PULSE

With various members of AM heading to Basel Week Miami as we speak, we’ll continue to preview some of the art that we will be checking out later this week. One of the booths packed with goodness at the PULSE fair will hold offerings from the Joshua Liner Gallery in the form of art from artists David Ellis, Evan Hecox, Ian Francis, Kris Kuksi (above), Mars-1, Oliver Vernon, Stephen Powers, Tomokazu Matsuyama, and Tony Curanaj. Openings: Takashi Murakami – “Flowers & Skulls” @ Gagosian (Hong Kong)

Last week, the Gagosian in Hong Kong presented a selection of works from Takashi Murakami entitled Flowers & Skulls, common reoccurring themes in the Japanese superstar’s imagery. The spacious showspace was a perfect backdrop for various paintings from his repertoire including his flower balls, stacked skulls, self-portraits and more. Last month, the Above Second Gallery opened their latest show featuring a guest curator (also see AM’s turn in 2011) – Thinkspace. Entitled LAX / HKG, the group exhibition featured works imported from the Los Angeles new contemporary movement including Amy Sol, Audrey Kawasaki (above), Brian M. Matthew Feyld – ‘Untitled (197 Drawings)’ @ Nowhere Montreal

Matthew Feyld’s new book entitled Untitled (197 Drawings) has just been released by Blackdot Publishing, and to accompany the edition, Nowhere Gallery in Montreal hosted an exhibition under the same untitled title featuring many of the works presented within the book. Matthew’s drawings and paintings have been a point of fascination for us at AM for a while now, and we’ve enjoyed watching the evolution of Feyld’s work. With Basel Week Miami just around the corner, street and graffiti artists have been busying themselves the last several weeks on murals and walls throughout the area. One of those in town is the South Africa-based DAL who hasn’t hesitated to get up several of his kinetic creations including the piece above entitled Rug-A and the one below Osteoplasty.C. Last night, AM stopped by the private opening of Cyrcle.’s new solo show titled Organized Chaos! Taking place in Los Angeles, this new exhibition by the two-man collective focuses on the central idea of the cube and the way in which bees and flowers relate to society as a whole. After executing the first phase of his revenge against Japanese bootleggers by taking those images, painting, and selling then for his show in Chicago (covered), Luke Chueh (interviewed) has traveled to Tokyo where he will have a chance to see these illegal productions in person.
