Streets: Anthony Lister (London)

If you remember, AM last hung out with Anthony Lister while he was busy getting up and putting on shows in Los Angeles (see video here). The Australian artist is now set to open simultaneous exhibitions next weekend at both Lazarides the Outsiders locations – London & Newcastle. Unslung Heroes will feature portraits of after-party revelers, rendered in his loose style mainly in a red, black and white color palette as well as some sculptural works. Leading up to the show, Lister has in the streets painting mural […]

Upcoming: Femke Hiemstra – “Let The Devil Wear Black” @ Roq La Rue

Next month in Seattle, the Roq La Rue Gallery will be hosting a joint show with Femke Hiemstra and Ryan Heshka entitled Let The Devil Wear Black. Hiemstra has been spending lots of time on an new body of work featuring her anthropomorphized animals and their surreal adventures – all rendered exquisitely. Here are some glimpses of the Dutch artist’s new painting, but plan to attend the opening (scheduled for December 7th) if you are in the area. Discuss Femke Hiemstra here.

Openings: Josh Keyes @ Roq La Rue

Last night in Seattle, after quickly selling out his charity print release, Josh Keyes (interviewed) drew back the curtains on an intriguing new collection of paintings that had been in the works for a while. Expanding on the imagery introduced at the end of last year with his Exodus 1 piece (which also made the show on loan from the collector), the Portland-based artist took a nostalgic look back at the influential visits to the Barnum & Bailey circus as a child, but through the lens of the less innocent […]

Upcoming: Know Hope – “The Weight” @ Known Gallery

Tomorrow night (November 10th) at the Known Gallery, Know Hope will be opening his first solo show in Los Angeles since 2009 (covered). Entitled The Weight, the new body of work from the Israeli street artist explores various interpretations of what weighs down on us, how we got to being there, and how we manage the burdens that we bear through a series of paintings and installations. You can expect some of the imagery that has been a constant for him and his work like his spindly […]

Preview: Josh Keyes @ Roq La Rue

Later tonight at the Roq La Rue Gallery in Seattle, Josh Keyes (interviewed) will be unveiling all new paintings alongside works from John Brophy. The small soldout showing features six of Keyes’ signature isolated environments, or organic cubism if you will, that seem to continue the narrative seen with an earlier piece, Exodus 1 – which also happens to be the image used for the associated print release. Get there early as it sounds like a line has already formed leading up to the opening at […]

Preview: Hiro Kurata – “This Land Was Your Land” @ Ivory & Black

Opening Friday night (November 9th) at the Ivory & Black in Soho is Hiro Kurata’s This Land Was Your Land. This exhibition will be the Japanese artist’s first solo in London and will highlight his interpretation of the traditional Western approaches to portraiture and still life with particular attention paid to symbols of wealth and power. “His imaginary heroes – the “Baseball sluggers” – are figures embodied of symbols that reflect the cultural and racial conflict in the modern Western Society, and his confusion between […]

Last weekend, Canadian painter Jacub Gagnon (interviewed) put his new work, collectively entitled More Human Than Human, on display in the Thinkspace project room. The sold out show of seven pieces featured his surreal renderings of wildlife set against a stark black background combining his creatures with objects often dictated by a clever play on words. Check out some photos below or head over for a look yourself before the show closes on November 24th. Photo credit: Peter Svab for Arrested Motion. Discuss Jacub Gagnon here. Discuss this show […]

Upcoming: Kate MccGwire – “Lure” @ All Visual Arts

Later this month, sculptor Kate MccGwire returns to All Visual Arts in her home city of London (see 2011) for a new solo show entitled Lure – “a dual reference to the ring of feathers used by a falconer to call and command their birds, and to the siren-like call of the work itself.” Creating non-conventional sculptural works with her material of choice – iridescent feathers – MccGwire is able to shape the plumage into undulating and seductive structures. Along with smaller works (like those seen here), the showstopper promises to […]
