Previews: Yuanyuan Yang – “Refracted Beings” @ Fuse Gallery

Tomorrow night, New York’s Fuse Gallery will premiere a solo exhibition from Chinese artist Yuanyuan Yang. The show entitled Refracted Beings is a taken from the Chinese word for color which also is a homonym for lust. Yang renders her painting to display this strong relationship between color and desire in her characters through a spectrum of colors refracting from their bodies. The show runs from Oct 24th to Nov. 21st so stop by and check this exhibition if you’re in town.

Jonathan LeVine Gallery hosted another great exhibition this past weekend with new work from Ashley Wood. The award winning illustrator presented a murky and moody series of paintings entitled Machine Sabbath which showcased Ashley’s unique artistic techniques of less is more. We’ve long admired Wood’s raw emotions and character depictions and displaying beside long time Australian comrade Jeremy Geddes (covered here), we noticed how well the two styles of works complimented each other highlighted by Wood’s dark & loose style providing contrast Geddes’ bright & tight techniques. Openings: PUSH – “In Other Words” @ Known Gallery

Los Angeles-based artist PUSH, who we last saw in Orange County painting a mural during the US Open of Surfing, opened a show at the Known Gallery on Saturday night. In Other Words features a set of new works on canvas, wood panel, paper that mirror the MSK-affiliated writer’s outdoor work of vibrant grids and patterns with a geometric network of colors. Openings: Gary Baseman – “Nightmares of Halloween Past” @ KK Gallery

Over the weekend, the newly opened KK Gallery in Los Angeles’ Chinatown Arts District held the opening reception for Gary Baseman’s (featured) latest solo show. Entitled Nightmares of Halloween Past, the exhibition featured appropriately themed paintings, the LA-based artist’s vintage Halloween photo collection, a performance by Nightmare and The Cat, a ghostly chandelier, and of course a costume for the man of the hour. Baby Tattooville ’12: Art Jam

The Art Jam is the centerpiece of Baby Tattooville (see 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008). As in the previous five years, artists in attendance collaborate on the large piece from the start of the BT weekend on Friday until the Saturday night deadline. Prints are then made of this completed painting and distributed to attendees after the weekend. This past weekend, Jonathan LeVine Gallery premiered a new exhibition from Australian painter Jeremy Geddes (interviewed). Making his long awaited United States solo debut along with peer Ashley Wood, Geddes made a splash with 17 superb paintings (previewed). Coming up next month (November 3rd), Galerie Perrotin will be presenting new works from KAWS in a solo show entitled Imaginary Friends. Earlier this month, the street collective TrustoCorp made their debut outside of the USA with a showing at Newcastle-based Outsiders gallery entitled International Bank of TrustoCorp. On November 8th, the Carmichael Gallery will be presenting Like Father, Like Son : NYC at a popup space in New York (6 to 8pm, 303 Tenth Ave in Chelsea).
