Mike Stilkey – “Full of Smiles and Soft Attentions” @ Times Square (Hong Kong)

One of the busiest indoor malls (with more than 200,000 visitors a day) in Hong Kong’s Time Square recently played host to the work of Mike Stilkey (interviewed). In San Francisco, no other local artist draws a crowd quite like Jeremy Fish. Openings: Meggs – “Truth In Myth” @ White Walls

Over the weekend, Australian-based painter Meggs opened his latest show Truth In Myth (previewed) at White Walls. The show featured a grand installation of a pyramid of skulls in a fully painted room, as well as a large street piece on the wall right outside the gallery. The new body of work consisted of paintings, collage, sculpture and mixed media that bridge the gap between past and present by fusing contemporary superhero elements with that of ancient mythology. Preview: Logan Hicks – “Structural Integrity” @ The Outsiders

This Friday night in London, Logan Hicks (interviewed) will be unveiling his stenciled renderings of urban landscapes at The Outsiders. Openings: David Ellis for “Go West” @ Mark Moore Gallery

The second half of the Joshua Liner curated Go West exhibition featured work from versatile artist David Ellis, which took up half of Los Angeles’ Mark Moore Gallery (see Kris Kuksi’s part in the show here). Update: Kelsey Brookes

It looks like Kelsey Brookes has been working on a new body of work for Quint Contemporary Art in La Jolla, set to open in November. The upcoming series of paintings, drawing from the San Diego-based artist’s science background, will be inspired by structural diagrams of different neurotransmitters as well as the drugs that mimic them, both designer (i.e. xanex, prozac) and recreational (i.e. mescaline, LSD). Openings: Kris Kuksi for “Go West” @ Mark Moore Gallery

Just this past Saturday night, the Mark Moore Gallery in Los Angeles hosted Go West, a joint show between Kris Kuksi and David Ellis curated by Joshua Liner that is a followup to the Go East exhibition that was hosted at their New York last May where the two galleries roles were flip-flopped. For his part, Kuksi brought along several of the large mixed media assemblages that he is famous for. Upcoming: Skullphone – “London, XX12” @ Ivory & Black

Next Friday night (July 20) in London, Skullphone will be opening his latest solo show entitled London, XX12 at Ivory & Black. The new body of work centers around his hand-painted digital media series (which mimics his digital billboard takeovers on the streets) and a sculpture installation, cast from the artist’s foot no less. Openings: Tat Ito – “Shinagawa Shinju” @ Above Second

Last month, the Above Second Gallery in Hong Kong played host to Japanese artist Tat Ito a selection of his paintings. Shinagawa Shinju featured the NY-based artists riff on storytellers of Japanese rakugo, a form of verbal entertainment based on comical monologues about ordinary lives. Ito’s imagery is well suited for the subject matter as the miniature characters in his work are often involved in humorous situations in the rich background tapestry of his world.
