Preview: London Pleasure Gardens

Starting tomorrow, June 30th, the London Pleasure Gardens will open their doors to the public in the heart of Olympic East London. The 20 acre destination will be one of the art, music, and cultural hubs for the hundreds of thousands of people who will be in town for the 30th Olympiad with major venues for live concerts, sculpture gardens, nature reserve, video projects and more. Releases: Ron English – “American Depress” @ Kidrobot

Ron English (featured) recently created a new vinyl sculpture with toy maker Kidrobot for their ultra limited Kidrobot Black line. Entitled American Depress, the 12-inch figure depicts Ron’s version of a bloated Mickey Mouse ensnared in a Amex “Black Card” credit trap. Yes, Comic-Con is almost upon us again. As always with SDCC, there is bound to be some art-related news or exhibitions in association with the event. One of these is Cartoon Network’s 20th Anniversary Exhibition curated by Mark Murphy with 75 artists slated to participate. Each were given a Cartoon Network show (like Samurai Jack, Adventure Time, Ben 10 Alien Force, Billy & Mandy, Dexter’s Laboratory, the Power Puff Girls, Gumball, etc) and asked to create a themed work and interpretation on their designated assignment. Continuing to spread his strange creatures and special form of surreal vintage portraiture to unlikely locales, Travis Louie’s (interviewed) next solo will be in Albuquerque, New Mexico. We last covered the NY-based painter’s showing in Northampton, Massachusetts at William Baczek Fine Arts back in May, and now it looks like his black and white cast of bizarre characters will be headlining a show at the Stranger Factory in August entitled Spirits. Openings: Ai Yamaguchi – “Ashita Mata” @ 10 Chancery Lane Gallery

Hong Kong’s 10 Chancery Lane is recently collaborated with Tokyo’s Mizuma Art for the first solo HK exhibition by Ai Yamaguchi. The show, entitled Ashita Mata (Again Tomorrow), consists of a varied body of work including prints, murals and an amazing large-scale installation composed of many individual paintings. Yamaguchi seems to be continually expanding artistically through the use of these different mediums and configurations while all the time remaining true to her longtime imagery of beautiful and young edo-period courtesans.

This Thursday night in New York, the Joshua Liner Gallery will be opening Shawn Barber’s (interviewed) Memoir: The Tattooed Portraits Series. The exhibition featuring new oil paintings by the Los Angeles-based artist is his second with the Chelsea showspace and his most personal to date. Like his currently showing exhibition in Lisbon (covered), master of all mediums Vhils (filmed) took the opportunity to showcase his versatility with a diverse selection for his newest solo at the Magda Danysz Paris location. After spreading his love with multiple murals throughout the city (including a map), fans of the Portugal-based street specialist finally got to see some of his indoor work including his new styrofoam pieces.
