Previews: Ben Tolman – “New Drawings” @ Jonathan LeVine Projects

This Saturday (June 23rd), Jonathan LeVine Projects in New Jersey will be presenting the insanely detailed drawings of Ben Tolman in a solo show. Working with both geometric forms and urban sprawl, the Washington D.C.-based artist creates frenetic compositions that will introduce you to some new intriguing new element with each viewing. Openings: Scott Listfield – “ALGORITHM” @ Spoke Art (SF)

Earlier this month, Scott Listfield’s ALGORITHM opened at Spoke Art in San Francisco, continuing to document the post-apocalyptic journeys of his reoccurring astronaut character. As with most of his shows, the Massachusetts-based painter presented a versatile body of work strongly influenced by where he was exhibiting. As such, his spacesuit wearing protagonist can be seen with Bay Area landmarks in the backdrop as well as interacting with drones, self driving vehicles, robots and other tech. Recap: Brendan Monroe – “Formations” @ Heath Ceramics (Los Angeles)

Continuing his longstanding collaboration with Heath Ceramics (also see 2014 in LA and 2015 in SF), Brendan Monroe (interviewed) recently held a showing at their Los Angeles showroom. Entitled Formations, the focus of the new body of the work was experimenting with Heath tile’s flat clay surface as a new medium for his organic patterns. Rounding out the exhibition was a selection of framed wall hangings, large and small, along with drawings and blob sculptures, some of which can still be viewed in the gallery space. Art loving feline fans rejoice, for the third edition of The Cat Art Show is returning to Los Angeles. The biennial exhibition is once again at Think Tank Gallery and will run from June 14 to June 24. This edition of the show will include over 140 works by 100 artists including Mark Ryden (pictured above), Martin Wittfooth, Marion Peck, Scott Hove, Seonna Hong, Ellen Won Unwerth, C215, and many more, each working in a range of media including painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, collage and embroidery. Tomorrow night (June 9th), a new exhibition from Emily Mae Smith opens to the public at Contemporary Fine Arts in Berlin. Entitled Feast of Totems, the show is well named as it features the re-occurring imagery of fruits, droplets, tongues, lips, and teeth that signal a grotesque consumption running through the new body of work. Also seen in multiple paintings is one of the Brooklyn-based artist’s most recognizable motifs, the totemic broom lady posed in familiar positions that harken back to classic paintings in art history. Recap: Anthony Iacono – “Talking to Strangers” @ P·P·O·W

Closing at the end of last month in New York, Anthony Iacono’s show at P·P·O·W intrigued us with his provocative subject matter as well as technique. While many of the New York-based artist’s pieces seem to be referencing BDSM fantasies (some more directly with colorful renderings of kinky scenes and some more subtle by incorporating rope or cords into the compositions), the imagery is tempered by his dark humor and the way he never expands the viewer’s field of vision to take in the entire spectacle. Continuing his annual showings at Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles, Eric Joyner (interviewed) will be returning for another solo on June 23rd. Cleverly entitled Glazed Machinations, the new body of work perfectly encapsulates what inspires him to paint – robots and donuts. Whether it be his signature Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots or incorporating the iconic Randy’s Donuts into his imagery, Joyner always finds novel new adventures for his two “muses” as well as unique ways for them to interact. On June 23rd, Circle Culture’s Berlin branch will be opening an exhibition with Kevin Earl Taylor, his third with the gallery. Showing: Dran – “Dessin du Jour/Londres”

Dran opened a new pop-up exhibition in London over the weekend entitled Dessin du Jour. As the title suggests, the body of work is dominated by approximately 120 drawings which the artist has been executing on a daily basis in preparation for the show. The pieces individually distill down the small victories and defeats, dreams and doubts and joys and sorrows of everyday life.
