Upcoming: Alex Israel – “New Waves” @ Gagosian (Hong Kong)

Tomorrow (May 24th) in Hong Kong’s Gagosian outpost, Alex Israel will be opening his exhibition entitled New Waves. For his first solo in the Chinese city-state, he is taking a truly multi-media approach to presenting work inspired by surfer culture and growing up in the sunny metropolis of Los Angeles. Along with pieces related to his 2017 film SPF-18 (trailer below), there are also some almost sculptural wave logo pieces – also used thematically in the promo animated short for the showing. Israel further explains […]

Previews: Scott Listfield – “ALGORITHM” @ Spoke Art (SF)

Coming up on June 2nd, ALGORITHM from Scott Listfield will open at Spoke Art in San Francisco. The Massachusetts-based painter’s ever present astronaut will be seen wondering the post-apocalyptic landscape of the Bay Area, populated by drones, self driving vehicles, robots. Pondering a future devoid of human life yet teeming with tech allows Listfield to ask questions like – “Just because we can do something, does that mean we should? What is technology without the human component? What kind of problems are we solving?” Interested in […]

Upcoming: Mark Jenkins – “BRD SHT” @ Lazinc

After a provocative installation on the rooftops of London back in March bringing attention to mental health issues and suicide, Mark Jenkins (interviewed) will be returning for an encore at Lazinc. From the looks of things, the American artist has been preparing inside as well as outside for his solo on May 25th (public opening), including placing one of this signature hooded figures fishing for art collectors with a framed picture of a worm in front of the Mayfair gallery. Entitled BRD SHT, the exhibition will include nine sculptural pieces, […]

Openings: Greg “Craola” Simkins – “The Escape Artist” @ KP Projects

Last weekend, Greg “Craola” Simkins (featured) opened his latest solo with KP Projects in West Hollywood entitled The Escape Artist. This was also the name of the large showstopper, the locally-based artist’s painting that took center stage while exploring the above and below water creatures of his world. Seen in this new body of work, which is kind of a prequel to some of his shows in the past, are some unusual eggs, the precursors to some of the fantastical bird seen in his imagery. Also making an appearance were […]

Previews: Evah Fan – “Inside, Outside, Come Around” @ Park Life

This Friday (May 24th), Evah Fan will be opening Inside, Outside, Come Around, her new show at Park Life in San Francisco. For this exhibition, the locally-based artist has created a handful of window studies for the gallery space, creating “windows” in a small windowless room. The premise of the new body of work as well as the imagery once again highlights the sense of play and whimsy that can often be seen in Fan’s work. Take a look at some preview images below… Discuss Evah Fan here.

Showing: Inka Essenhigh @ Miles McEnery Gallery

Currently on view until May 25th at Miles McEnery Gallery in New York is a new selection of works from Inka Essenhigh. Returning to the medium of enamel, the locally-based artist has created surreal paintings that continue her imagery of flora and fauna frolicking in the woods, with a hint of inclusion of urban elements. Abstract and figurative at the same time, the cartoonish renderings feature a psychedelic Fantasia-like aesthetic that take the viewer into a different world. Photos via the gallery. Openings: D*Face – ‘Fornever’ @ Galerie Itinerrance (Paris)

After painting a large new mural Turn Coat (covered) in the 13th District of Paris, D*Face (interviewed) unveiled his first solo show in France at Galerie Itinerrance. Entitled FORNEVER, the exhibition presented canvasses, sculptures, installations, HPMs, prints, and more. The British artist also experimented with a new medium – ‘Memory Trays’ – assemblages of found objects to bring a narrative dimension to his portraits. Thus, his subjects are plunged into the past as if they were nothing but an accumulation of memories, a discrete stencil is hidden inside a […]

Previews: Pejac – “Waterline” (Paris)

From June 20 to June 24, Pejac will be hosting a new exhibition in Paris entitled Waterline inside an old ‘péniche’ boat moored right next to Notre-Dame. Like his show last year in Venice (covered), held in a gondola workshop, the Spanish artist has tailored his new body of work to fit the unconventional venue with a series of around 30 drawings and studies on paper. The imagery on display, much cleverly dealing with environmental and socio-political issues, are examples of the prep work that Pejac puts […]

Openings: Mark Drew – “What Goes On?” @ Spoke Art (New York)

Earlier this month, Spoke Art’s New York location hosted the opening of Mark Drew’s new solo show. Entitled What Goes On?, the new body of work continues the Tokyo-based artist’s signature juxtaposition of Peanuts comics and 90s rap lyrics. The mashup of hip hop bars with Snoopy & gang by the Australian artist takes two presumably familiar elements for the viewer and generates a new refreshing point of view and interpretation. Rounding out the exhibition was a dog house entrance as well as a couple installations featuring items like Snoopy paraphernalia and old […]
