Teaser / Videos: Alexander Calder – “Calder’s Circus” @ The Whitney Museum

Starting this Friday (Dec.9), New York’s Whitney Museum of American Art will be pulling one of their permanent collection’s most beloved works out of storage and putting it back on display. Calder’s Circus was created by Alexander Calder while he was living in Paris in the late 1920s and early 1930s. He transformed simple, everyday materials such as wire, cork and wood into all the settings and participants found in an actual circus—only miniaturized to fit within a few portable suitcase. Calder began giving performances […]

Preview: David Flores x Phil Stern @ The Phil Stern Gallery

Tomorrow night, December 8th, the Phil Stern Gallery will debut a new exhibit by award-winning photographer Phil Stern and artist David Flores. If you remember a few months back, Flores painted a mural in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles based on a James Dean photograph shot by the Stern (covered). Interesting enough, it was through the photos of AM photographer Carlos Gonzalez that Stern first saw the mural. The remixed James Dean wall made such an impression on Stern that he decided to open […]

Teaser: Casey Weldon – “Groty” @ Gallery 1988 (Venice)

Tomorrow night (December 8th) in Venice, California, Casey Weldon will be presenting a new set of works at Gallery 1988. Groty will be the first solo show in Los Angeles for the Brooklyn-based painter and will feature more of his surreal portraiture that we have enjoyed in various group shows up to this point. It will be interesting to see what he can bring in a more focused and cohesive setting. Another preview image after the jump…

Preview: Patrick Martinez – “Reel Tawlk” @ Loft in Space

Tomorrow night in Oahu, Loft in Space will be hosting the newest solo from Patrick Martinez entitled Reel Tawlk. Although he is known for his signature neon urban phraseology (of which this show has plenty), the LA-based artist has been flexing his painting muscles as of late and this show will be no different with a series of portraits (including his own). On the docket will be a diverse selection of work including video projections, portraiture on plush blankets, mixed media works, and of course […]

Previews: KAWS – “FOCUS:KAWS” @ Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth

There was no sign of KAWS this year in person at Art Basel Week Miami. Perhaps it’s because he is preparing for his upcoming show, FOCUS:KAWS (teased), at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. Judging from this photo, the catalog is ready to go as well as some installed 20″ tondos in the background that look familiar. This is just the first stop for his upcoming schedule of museum exhibitions as he will move on to Atlanta’s High Museum of Art in February and […]

Preview: Linnea Strid – “As It Falls Over You” @ Thinkspace

Sweden-based painted Linnea Strid is getting set to unleash a new body of work for her show this Saturday, December 10th, at Thinkspace. The LA exhibition, entitled As It Falls Over You (a joint show with Nathan DeYoung), will showcase some of Strid’s signature hyperrealism and feature some of her favorite imagery – dripping wet faces and their interplay with water. Preview images after the jump…

Basel Week Miami ’11 / Streets: RETNA

A major player during this year’s Art Basel Week Miami, it seemed like RETNA (featured) and his work was in demand everywhere. Not only did we see his handiwork at the Primary Projects group show, in the Wynwood District, and at various fairs, we also had the chance to attend a Q&A session at his temporary luxury home on Hibiscus Island. The mural seen above though was probably the largest wall we saw from him in Miami, and is located near Ron English’s piece from 2009. More photos […]

Basel Week Miami ’11: Do Ho Suh @ Lehmann Maupin

Another artist whose work caught our eye during Art Basel Week Miami was Do Ho Suh’s creations for Lehmann Maupin at the main fair. Like his showing at the NY gallery back in September (covered), the Korean sculptor and installation artist brought some captivating household items created from translucent fabric that attracted many fair-goers to examine their ethereal details up close. More photos after the jump…

Openings: Ray Caesar – “it started with eve…” @ Stephen Webster

Over the weekend, Stephen Webster (located in Beverly Hills) opened up their 2nd floor gallery space with an exhibition curated by the Corey Helford Gallery. Featuring the work of Ray Caesar (interviewed), the evening centered around the murder mystery theme during the special event. Caesar’s intricate and impressive work filled the walls and it was certainly a visual treat much in the same manner as his previous showing in Los Angeles back in October (covered). For the most part, the night featured artwork which was not shown during […]

Anthony Lister – “Bogan Paradise” @ Gallery A.S.

Prolific Aussie artist Anthony Lister (interviewed) recently put on a show with Gallery A.S. entitled Bogan Paradise. After plastering Los Angeles with his work in August, this new show in his home country is staged in a recently de-zoned sex shop in Sydney’s Chinatown and challenges conceptions of the Australian identity – those attributes perceived as both positive and negative. In particular, Lister explores Larrikinism, “the name given to the Australian folk tradition of irreverence, mockery of authority and disregard for rigid norms of propriety.” More photos via Slamxhype after the […]
