Preview: Travis Louie – “Curious Pets” @ Merry Karnowsky

This Saturday, November 12th, the Merry Karnowsky will play host to Travis Louie (interviewed) and his distinctive portraiture as well as his Curious Pets. The NY-based painter will be expanding his series of of paintings (also see Roq La Rue show) featuring a vintage look at fantastical pets and their owners, some of whom are quite strange themselves. A couple weeks ago, the Metro Gallery opened their doors to the UK-based D*Face’s (interviewed) and a new body of work. Burn Brighter features original pieces and limited editions, his flutter-dies and chopped up books (which were introduced at the Corey Helford show in LA back in April), as well as many of the cheeky installations he has become known for. Preview: Thomas Doyle – “Surface to Air” @ LeBasse Projects

On a busy art weekend in Los Angeles, another show to visit on Saturday night, November 12th, is Thomas Doyle’s solo at LeBasse Projects. The NY-based artist will be filling the Culver City showspace with a continuation of his Distillation series, an uncanny intersection of destruction and domestic life in the form of his model-like sculptural work. Surface to Air will also feature the debut of Doyle’s new Foregone series, consisting of photographic portraits of the child figures that feature prominently in his three-dimensional work. […]

Last Thursday, Walton Ford opened his latest exhibition at Paul Kasmin, entitled I Don’t Like to Look at Him, Jack. It Makes Me Think of that Awful Day on the Island. Taking its name from the 1933 film King Kong, the show includes three Kong-sized works on paper, capturing the beast in several facial expressions. Prolific Parisian street artist Christian Guemy aka C215 will be presenting a new body of work at the Shooting Gallery in San Francisco on December 10th. Smoke gets in your Eyes will feature his multi-colored works, with the subject matter hinted in the title of the show, and will put his exquisite stenciling ability on display. David Flores and Shepard Fairey (featured) continue to go big as they have now collaborated on a new piece standing in the midst of Downtown Los Angeles. Covering an entire wall, the mural is a combination of Flores’ unique design on one side and on the other, Fairey’s black and white iconography. Last week, AM stopped by the architectural tour de force and New York showspace Sperone Westwater to take in the new solo from Tom Sachs. The painter and sculptor created a vast body of work influenced by a disparate range of historic objects and cultural icons which were recreated and remixed in his signature blend of whimsy and mastery of materials. Just a few days ago, Paul Insect debuted his first major U.S. solo exhibition at Venice’s Post No Bills gallery. Featuring a vast array of original art on paper as well as exclusive limited edition prints, the show illustrated the street artist’s many different talents and interests.
