Seventh Letter Crew for MBW Building Project

Last weekend, Mr. Brainwash invited the Seventh Letter Crew over in order to kick off his largest Los Angeles exhibition to date. Beginning on October 9th, the building that sits near the La Brea and Santa Monica will open it’s doors to artists around the globe and will offer over 80,000 square feet of blank walls and concrete. The long talked about project had been circling around for months without any sense of progress but clearly things are now moving forward. The staircase that sits […]

Baby Tattooville ’11: Michael Hussar – “Wunderland”

For the third straight year (see 2010), one of the featured artists, Michael Hussar, hosted the strictly adult-oriented portion of Baby Tattooville – Wunderland. As before, all of the action took place in Hussar’s suite where in the main room, models posed on a large bed as muses for Hussar & other artist’s drawings and for impromptu photo sessions (see above with Ron English). The fun also continued in the second room where attendees and artists mingled. Some were able to meet for the first […]

Openings: “In the Wake of Dreams” @ Thinkspace

On Saturday night, the highly anticipated In the Wake of Dreams opened at the Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City. Featuring the collective talents of Audrey Kawasaki, Amy Sol, Stella Im Hultberg, and Mari Inukai, the group show sees the artists and friends four years out from their 2007 Four Dreams show in Portland. The new work showed a maturity and complexity that has developed over the years with Audrey exploring patterns and textures, Amy continuing to put a larger focus on her human characters, Stella also […]

Frieze ’11 – Mark Ryden @ Paul Kasmin Gallery

After recently bringing you preview coverage of what Team Gallery has in store for next weekend’s Frieze Art Fair, we now have a (USDA) prime sample of what Paul Kasmin Gallery will be serving up at the London event. Much like the single awe-striking painting brought abroad last year, Mark Ryden has yet again proven his idiosyncratic genius with this newest creation. Marrying his affinity for Honest Abe and his love for painting meat comes The Meat Shop. The two recurring protagonists – the complicated […]

Baby Tattooville ’11: Preview – “Baby Tattooville on Parade” @ Riverside Art Museum

As per tradition, each year’s Baby Tattooville is associated with a show at the neighboring Riverside Art Museum. This year’s exhibition (October 8th, 8-10pm), in celebration of the 5th anniversary of the event, includes work from every artist that has ever been associated with the art retreat (with just a couple exceptions), so in other words, it will include a staggering amount of quality work from many of your favorite artists lent from various collections.  Take a look at all the artist’s names included in […]

The exhibit featured limited edition prints, hand finished multiples, toys and other artwork that displayed the artist’s unique design and sense of humor. The place was filled from the start and crowds of people were lined up to meet the artist who also took the time to sign his artwork. Overall, the art on display featured an interesting mixture of various styles that English has utilized over […]

Baby Tattooville ’11: Circus Punk Customs

Circus Punk customs are a new addition to Baby Tattooville. 50 blank pieces were available for attending artists to paint and work on. Once finished, these customs will be arranged in rows and BT attendees will have the chance to compete for them. Similar to what is done at fairs, attendees will get to throw at these and try to knock them down. Each person will then get to keep the custom that he or she strikes. More photos by Carlos Gonzalez after the jump.

Baby Tattooville ’11: Art Jam Begins

Baby Tattooville’s Art Jam is easily the most recognized event of this special weekend and has existed since Baby Tattooville’s very first year (see 2010, 2009, 2008). As always, artists in attendance are given the freedom to contribute to the large collaboration piece at anytime during the weekend up until the deadline on Saturday night. Upon completion of the painting Saturday night, the work is used to produce prints overnight that attendees will receive Sunday morning. See photos by Carlos Gonzalez of the early stages […]
