Openings: “Eve” @ Subliminal Projects

A couple weeks ago, the gallery that Obey built hosted an group exhibition of nine female artists whose work was collectively entitled Eve. Judy Chicago, Mary Beth Edelson, Kim McCarty, Ayanah Moor, Alex Prager, Lisa Steele, Swoon, Stella Vine and Hannah Wilke are a diverse group of artists stemming from the era of the 1970’s to the present and each brought their unique touch to Subliminal Projects exploring their perceptions of femininity. Openings: Saner – “Sequestro Express” @ Mid City Arts

Last Friday, Mid City Arts in the heart of Los Angeles hosted an unique exhibition by Mexican artist Saner entitled Sequestro Express. The title of the show is translated to Express Kidnapping, a subject that certainly has significance in certain Central and South American countries as well as Mexico of course. Teaser: David Stoupakis – “Walking Within These Shadows” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Master of the dark arts, David Stoupakis, will be returning to the Corey Helford this Saturday night, August 6th, to open his third solo exhibition there. Entitled Walking Within These Shadows, the new body of work will be more personal in nature drawing from his life experiences and featuring a more somber color palette.  Stoupakis will be showing alongside UK-based digital artist Tom Bagshaw. FAME Festival ’11: Vhils

Plaster, concrete, paper, wood – where other people see construction materials and tools, the visionary Vhils sees art. After working on a wall outside of the Post No Bills gallery in the States in conjunction with the European Bailout Show (covered), the Lisbon-based street artist traveled to Italy to do his part for the annual Fame Fest. Take a look at some of the other pieces he produced while in town as well as a video of some of the shenanigans that went down.

Openings: Dalek & Greg Lamarche – “Geometric Balance” @ Show & Tell Gallery

A couple weeks ago, the Show & Tell Gallery in Toronto hosted new work from Dalek (interviewed) and Greg Lamarche (interviewed). Masters of structured typography and geometric shapes, the two displayed impeccable linework as well as balanced compositions in the paintings they brought. Openings: Anthony Lister @ HVW8

Last Friday evening, HVW8 gallery unveiled new works by Australian-born artist Anthony Lister (interviewed). For this project, Junk Food Art House teamed up with the artist in bringing the theme of the lost superhero to the forefront. The exhibit put a cap to the three-week long venture which had Lister’s posters placed all across the city of Los Angeles. This most recent work continues to explore the artist’s fascination with the superhero as a way to discuss themes of postmodernism and the loss of identity. […]

This past Thursday, Post No Bills gallery held their second gallery exhibit which featured works by the likes of Anthony Micallef, Conor Harrington, Ian Francis, Jonathan Yeo, JR, Mode 2, Paul Insect, Stanley Donwood, Vhils and Zevs. Titled as the European Bailout Show, this exhibition focused entirely on some of Europe’s most interesting artists working today. Openings: Audrey Kawasaki – “Restlessly Still” @ Merry Karnowsky

On Saturday night, the LA art crowd packed the Merry Karnowsky Gallery to see the work of three artists – Femke Hiemstra, Deedee Cheriel, and of course Audrey Kawasaki (interviewed). On display were paintings and cutout drawings all displaying Ms. Kawasaki’s exquisite eye for detail, mastery of her medium (especially in integrating wood grain), and her sensuous touch.
