Over the weekend, Shows & Tell Gallery in Toronto opened a two person exhibition, Double Rainbow Rainbow (previewed), a smart curatorial pairing of two woman that each play with color in distinct and effective ways. Known for her kaleidoscopic cut paper sculptures, Jen Stark was easily the standout with a trio of her signature mixed-media works meticulously crafted by hand, along with a series of her playful felt tip pen drawings. A couple of nights ago, we headed over to the Pasadena Museum of California Art (PMCA) to check out two show openings. One was Street Cred (covered), and the other was Inside Out from the renowned Clayton Brothers (featured). If you remember, last September, Christian and Rob presented an exhibition with the same title at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (MMoCA), so this is the second showing for this retrospective body of work. Last Sunday, AM attended the screening and Q+A for Kenny Scharf: More, Newer, Better, Nower, Funner, as part of a series of short films at the Levis Film Workshop, each based on an artist in the Art in the Streets exhibition. Taking a cue from our primitive ancestors, Nate Frizzell (interviewed) went old school by employing man’s oldest writing utensil with his newest body of work. Australian-based artist Rod Luff’s exhibition, The Moleskin Project (previewed) opened last Thursday, which also signified the first show put on at Spoke Art in San Francisco. As the title of the exhibition suggests, the show is comprised of framed and unframed pages taken from Rod’s moleskin that contained an array of oil paintings, studies, thoughts and sketches that he produced in his spare time over the course of a year. Currently showing alongside Souther Salazar (covered) at Jonathan LeVine Gallery is Japanese phenom Haroshi. The show Future Primitive impressed us from the moment AM laid eyes on his incredible works. At first glance, his sculptural pieces seem like everyday objects like a hydrant, a forty of beer, or a moose head.
