Teaser: Kent Williams @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery

Kent Williams, who recently showcased a fantastic body of work in New Mexico (covered), is already working on some paintings for a new solo scheduled for May in Los Angeles. The show planned for Merry Karnowsky Gallery will include this painting, New Spring, currently on display at the LCAD MFA Faculty and Students Exhibition in Irvine, CA. Gifting NYC with joint solo shows along with Andy Kehoe (covered), Gary Baseman offered up a more somber and personal body of work at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery last Saturday night entitled Walking Through Walls. Tonight, May 12th, Ryan Travis Christian returns to Guerrero Gallery for the next installment of his works. In what looks like a continuation of works from his previous show last year at GG, Ryan moves to the main room with his classic use of blacks, whites and everything in between. This time, he expands his crazy visual patterns and distinct subject matter to include sex, parties, dreams and more. Armory Week can get a little overwhelming with the number of formal fairs which one can attend. By the end of the week, we needed to blow off some steam. It’s a good thing Ryan McGinness knows how to throw a party/exhibition. AM recently visited the studio of friend Shepard Fairey (featured) to preview his works for the coming show at Robert Berman Gallery in Los Angeles. One of the booths we really enjoyed at this year’s Pulse fair was that of Christina Ray, who presented a solo exhibition by artist Beka Goedde. Goedde’s work is very much based in printmaking, using such techniques as etching and Chine-collé (the application of thin colored paper as color) to create unique mixed media pieces that sometimes resemble simple collage and other times look more like complex abstract paintings. Armory Week’s merry go round of satellite fairs would not be complete without the inclusion of Scope. Held at a large warehouse facility on the west wide of the island, the location reflected the grass root and creative vibe that gave us numerous sound related installations and a really gaudy ode to decadence. Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang, who recently orchestrated the New Year’s fireworks for Taipei, recently turned his attention to a different part of the world. His exhibition Resplandor y Soledad or Splendor and Solitude is currently showing at the Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo in Mexico City (runs through March 20th), his first solo in Latin America. It features a representation of Lake Texcoco made famous in the legend of the founding of the city of Tenochititian surrounded by 14 large scale gunpowder drawings. Take a look […]

Showing: Zevs – “Liquidated Version” @ De Buck Gallery

We haven’t updated you on the whereabouts and works of Zevs in a while ever since his show and arrest in Hong Kong. It looks like the French street artist is currently showing at De Buck in New York with a new body of work entitled Liquidated Version. Continuing his assault on corporate identities and what they represent, the show features his signature dripping brand logos as well as other mix-media works. More photos after the jump…
