In anticipation of his upcoming two person exhibition with Remi/Rough, AM brings you a view from the studio of Edinburgh based artist Steve More. More’s heritage as a graffiti writer dates back to the mid 80’s when his elaborately styled letter based pieces started to go up under the name of OneMor. For those interested in these sort of shows, Gallery 1988, the Melrose location, has a group exhibition tonight featuring artwork of your favorite comedians. New York Gallery Freight + Volume open their 2011 season with a group show this week featuring Kristen Schiele (interviewed) and Eric White (interviewed). Haymaker also features Tatiana Berg, Doug Fishbone and Damian Stamer, with the curatorial theme focusing on commerce within art. We hear that Eric is bringing some of his album cover pieces to the show along with a new canvas that looks at and parodies the sixties American dream. Besides his participation in the “In The Nursery” group show, Ray Caesar has some bigger things planned for January – namely his solo at Jonathan Levine Gallery. Unique in the scene as one of the rare artists who find success with utilizing the digital medium, Caesar’s newest body of work will be entitled “A Gentle Kind of Cruelty”. As you can see in the image above, his pale skinned beauties are not always what they seem. See for yourself on January 22nd.

We now have some more info to share with you after first bringing you news of a Los Angeles exhibition from James Jean (interviewed) the other day. Entitled Rebus and opening on March 12th, the much anticipated showing at Martha Otero will feature eight large scale paintings, one of which can be seen above and one from our previous post. Openings: Jean Labourdette (Turf One) – “The Rising” @ Jonathan Levine Gallery

Opening a several weeks ago alongside SHAG (covered) at Jonathan Levine Gallery was Jean Labourdette (Turf One). The self taught French-Canadian artist created a great show he named “The Rising”. Utilizing numerous found objects on which he painted on, Jean worked to create interactive pieces for the viewers. What we enjoyed in particular were the realistic subjects which which were effortlessly integrated into their respective backdrops. Check out the full show after the jump.

Paul Barnes brings his unique storytelling to Los Angeles this week in the form of his first LA solo show Happy Valley in Thinkspace’s project room. The Scottish artist uses a muted but warm colour palette within his work and the textured plaster backdrop applied to the board he paints on adds a beautiful and timeless depth to his playful compositions. Barnes’ work features a cast of superbly rendered characters steeped in folklore and narrative, and you should definitely try and check them out in […]
