Basel Week Miami ’10 – Hauser & Wirth

As they did at Art Basel Switzerland, Hauser & Wirth brought some spectacular Paul McCarthy pieces to share with the Art Basel Miami Beach attendees. Luckily, they also exhibited works by other artists in their esteemed program, including Louise Bourgeois, Martin Creed, Subodh Gupta, Mary Heilmann, Roni Horn, Bharti Kher, John McCracken, Joan Mitchell, Roman Signer and Monika Sosnowska. Basel Week Miami ’10 – Paula Cooper Gallery

Two stars of the last auction season – Rudolph Stingel and Kelley Walker, who both had auction records set, were featured up close and personal at Paula Cooper’s booth during Art Basel Miami Beach. The gallery’s stacked roster of artists provided them with fantastic pieces by the aforementioned duo and also Carl Andre and Wayne Gonzales (pictured above). Last Saturday night, the Jonathan LeVine Gallery hosted the opening of SHAG’s (interviewed) newest body of work “Ambergris” (previewed). As indicated by the obscure title, the new collection of paintings are centered on a nautical, and more specifically, a whaling theme, all while maintaining his mid-century aesthetic. Happily, the artist was able to to make it to the opening despite an unfortunate accident that left him injured. Take a look at all the opening pics after the jump…

Last Saturday, Guererro Gallery hosted the opening for an exhibition featuring two artists who are truly masters at their craft: Mike Giant and Adam 5100 (previewed). Both artists displayed work not typically found in their previous exhibitions, which gave the show a more personal feel. Last Saturday night, the masks came off for Sylvia Ji’s (interviewed) and her new body of work, Shapeshifter, at the Corey Helford Gallery. Featuring Ji’s unique portraiture minus the “Day of the Dead” facial markings, this collection of paintings were revealing in more ways than one and was built around Native American imagery. Winterlong Gallerie in Niort, France recently opened up a group show Ashes Of Our Time which included one of the stalwarts of Brazilian street art, Herbert Baglione. Wall murals, an introspective installations, and paintings were all part of what Baglione had to offer for his French fans. Last Saturday night, the Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City opened a new show featuring some of their young artists, particularly those whose work involved elements of photo-realism. For “The New Realism”, Aaron Nagel, Jeff Ramirez, Jennifer Nehrbass, Linnea Strid, Nathan DeYoung and Pakayla Rae Biehn each put forth their vision of the human form but with their unique twists.
