Preview: Laurie Lipton – “Machine Punk” @ La Luz de Jesus

One of the most gifted artists we know that works mainly graphite, Laurie Lipton, will be presenting a mostly new body of work this Friday night at the venerable La Luz de Jesus.  Entitled “Machine Punk”, many of the new works are inspired by the steampunk movement and her apparent fascination for complex machinery. Openings: Tara McPherson – “The Bunny in the Moon” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

A couple of Saturdays back, Tara McPherson captivated the NY crowd with a beautiful new body of work entitled “The Bunny in the Moon” at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery. The show consisted of a series of paintings featuring her lovely ladies with their animal friends and a wall installation of one-eyed flower sculptures, all rendered mostly in her signature pink and light blue. Studio Visits: Greg “Craola” Simkins @ Gallery 1988

With Greg’s exhibition opening this Friday night at G1988LA, we decided to drop by Greg’s studio two weeks ago to see how everything was coming along. Greg was finishing up one last painting and everything else was pretty much complete and AMAZING. Openings: Neck Face – “Into Darkness” @ OHWOW (LA)

With wall to wall people and a line wrapped around the block, Neck Face proved for the second straight Halloween just why his nightmarish art and the pagan holiday are such a fitting marriage. Openings: JR – “The Wrinkles of the City” in Shanghai

2010 TED Prize winner JR, who beautified the city of Shanghai with his inspirational project “The Wrinkles of the City” (covered), also recently opened his gallery show in China hosted by Magda Danysz Gallery. Located in the historical part of the city, The Bund, the space was perfect setting for the street activist’s new photos taken in China with some pasted onto what looked like found materials. Releases / Signing: Hi-Fructose Collected Edition Vol. 2 @ SFMOMA

Our friends at Hi-Fructose will be releasing their Hi-Fructose Collected Edition Vol. 2 tomorrow (November 4th, 6:30 – 8:30 pm) at the SFMOMA. There will be limited edition box sets and hardcover editions saved especially for this event, but even more exciting is that there will be an artist signing including appearances by Audrey Kawasaki, Camille Rose Garcia, Ferris Plock, Amy Sol, and Mars-1 as well as founders/editors Annie Owens and Attaboy. Preview: DZINE – “Voodoo” @ Leo Koenig Projekte

Opening tomorrow night at NYC’s Leo Koenig Projekte is the latest solo show by Chicago artist DZINE entitled, “Voodoo.” The exhibition includes one of the artists’ amazing custom bicycle sculptures, as well as a video installation, sculptural drawings and photographs—each inspired by and partially produced on the Dutch Island of Curacao during his residency at the Instituto Bena Bista Curacao Center for Contemporary Art. In part one of our studio visit to Faile’s Williamsburg workshop, we showed you the digs where the magic happens and also took a close look at the uniquely crafted building blocks that form their new works.
