Openings: Faile Book Launch & Show @ LES Pop-Up in NYC

On Thursday, AM braved the stormy streets of New York to attend the launch event at Faile’s pop-up gallery where the Brooklyn duo kicked off the release of their soon-to-be bestseller “Prints + Originals 1999–2009” (previewed). Published by Gestalten, this hefty book gives us an inside look at the bread and butter behind Faile’s rise to prominence – the prints and their unique silkscreening/collaging techniques. The Carmichael Gallery will celebrate it’s three year anniversary this Saturday night by hosting a show entitled “Brit Paint”. Britain known for setting trends in the street art scene, but many fans may not know that it has some fine painters using the old-school painterly methods. Featuring a collection of works from Micallef (interviewed), Will Barras, Simon Birch, Guy Denning, Tobias Keene and Ian Francis (featured) – there’s certainly plenty of talent in this lot. Currently showing over in Denmark at this year’s Art Copenhagen is Dave White’s “Forgotten Alchemy”. The series is a little different from the signature sneaker paintings he is famous for, but you can definitely see his style come through with these gun renderings. It’s been a wild few weeks of activity in which Yoshitomo Nara & Asia Society blessed the city of New York with a series of statues along Park Avenue, an Open-Studio Visit and a fantastic retrospective. On Saturday, Esao Andrews opened up his latest exhibition at Jonathan Levine Gallery with a new body of work consisting of some of his largest paintings to date. Utilizing his signature mix of creative story telling and darkly laid out characters/compositions, Mr. Andrews entertained the audience with a rich and complex show. Ever since the Deitch appointment at MOCA was announced, it was a question of not if, but when a major street art exhibition was coming to Los Angeles. It’s time for another update from Stavenger, site of the Nuart Festival. Looks like Vhils is in town now chiseling away at another masterpiece. We had only recently enjoyed his work at the fantastic Eurotrash show and the Viva La Revolucion exhibit so if you have not seen the textures of his work in person, you are missing out.
