Preview: “Looking Glass” @ Basel Miami (2008) – Part II

Andrew from Thinkspace has sent over some more images for part II of our preview for his “Looking Glass” show during Art Basel week. We would have to say the crown jewel would have to be the piece that Audrey Kawasaki posted on her blog last weekend. This piece was part of her installation for her “Drawing Room” show but was not completed at that time if you remember. See more pieces from the show after the jump … and check out part I of […]

Asbestos @ Safehouse Gallery

Dublin based street artist Asbestos’ newest show at Safehouse Gallery features portraits of boxers from the Ligoniel Amateur Boxing Club in North Belfast. His works are reminiscent of JR’s recent show which also featured photorealistic images on found objects – well, obviously for JR since they were photos but these works from Asbestos are combination of photography and painting. His moniker is explained in his words “street art is a little bit like Asbestos. Asbestos is all around us (in the walls and in the […]

Preview: Chris Berens @ Roq La Rue

Like something out of a lucid dream, Chris Berens’ paintings are as enigmatic and imaginative as they come. Both from a technical perspective as well as an aesthetic viewpoint, there is something wonderfully amorphous and endless about his work. His art appears as sinister as it does beautiful, teetering that fantastical line between foreign yet familiar, gorgeous yet grotesque, bizarre yet natural. With certain elements appearing crystal clear and others blurred, it’s as if they were representations of a person attempting to transcribe the images […]

Openings: Travis Louie @ FUSE gallery

Travis Louie’s first solo in New York was as good as the Adams Family was strange and boy was it strange… err good… umm… well both actually. Uniquely hidden away at the back of a hip East Village bar, the FUSE Gallery premiered Strange Neighbors (previewed/interviewed) to a crowded and energetic group. AM was on hand as Travis presented a bountiful 15 piece show (which is more than his usual for any show). Each painting was beautifully executed and well crafted. Each character was accompanied with a […]

Preview: Jeff Soto @ Riverside Art Museum

AM  was able to stop by last week to check out Jeff Soto’s installation of his show at the Riverside Art Museum. We aren’t able to show you everything as we wouldn’t want to ruin the surprise, but we do have some tasty images to keep you happy until opening night – December 13th (6-9 pm). As you can see from the photos, the museum has given Jeff ample space to work with for his first museum show – and he has taken full advantage with some of […]

Openings: White Noise @ Black Rat Press

Black Rat Press’ annual group show “White Noise” will open tonight featuring D*Face, Nick Walker, Blek Le Rat, Lucas Price, Asha Zero, Matt Small and Brian Adam Douglas. Luckily for us and our readers, we were able to see some advance photos from the special preview event last night. We love how lighting effects and ambience really highlighted each piece of art nicely. Some favorites as well as all the photos after the jump.

Preview/Interviews: Stella Im Hultberg @ Limited Addiction

One of our favorite artists, Stella Im Hultberg is part of a group show that opens tonight at Limited Addiction Gallery along with Lyle Motley and Sean Christopher. She takes time from her busy Thanksgiving to answer a few questions for us including some of her plans for 2009. Interview after the jump…

Openings: Herakut “Dirty Laundry” Show (UK)

Herakut’s (interviewed) show “Dirty Laundry” (previewed) is officially opening tonight but here are some photos from the preview night courtesy of Romanywg (photographer extraordinaire). The setup looks amazing – from the “flesh suit laundry” installation to the presumably custom painted walls. Everything was top notch. We had originally thought that because of the fact that it was an exhibition of pre-commissioned paintings that it would be a pretty random show.  We were wrong.  All the pieces in this new body of work definitely fits together […]

Preview/Interview: David B. Smith Gallery @ Art Basel Miami 2008

David B. Smith Gallery or the gallery formerly known as Limited Addiction is showcasing three of their artists this year at Art Basel (Miami) – Josh Keyes, Jason Thielke, and Gregory Euclide. The exhibit will be at the Aqua Wynwood this year starting November 4th. These artists all have their distinctive styles that we like: Keyes with his “cubism” and ecological themes, Thielke with his architectural interpretations of the human form, and Euclide with his multi-layered landscapes… David has kindly sent us some preview images from […]

Second Helpings of AM for Thanksgiving

It has been a wonderful few months for us since AM launched in September, so we would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving and thank our readers for your continued support. We’ve covered so much great art in our first few months, we thought that it might be a good time to recap some of our favorite stories so far. From Audrey Kawasaki to Kaws, Shepard Fairey to Baby Tattooville, Mark Ryden to Josh Keyes, Takashi Murakami to Greg Simkins, […]
