Openings: Fuco Ueda – “Odd-Eye” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Last month, Thinkspace Gallery hosted an exhibition from Fuco Ueda entitled Odd-Eye, her second solo (see 2014) with the Culver City showspace. The beautifully rendered new works from the Japanese artist are mainly created on canvas with a few smaller pieces on paper, all featuring her characteristic lush imagery and palette. Surrounded by reoccurring motifs and symbols of death (such as chrysanthemum flowers & skeletal elements) as well as disquieting creatures, her flushed girls seem to be trapped in some sort of lurid dream world. For this year’s Sydney Festival, Cofounders Alex Mustonen and Daniel Arsham from Snarkitechture will be bringing their The Beach installation (see last year) back at the The Cutaway at Bangaroo Reserve. The 60m x 23m ball pit may be the world’s largest and will feature 1.1 million balls this time, an ocean of monochromatic fun for visitors to dive into. Head over here for more information. Thomas Canto recently introduced his latest big project, the Illusory Perspectives installation at Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. This large installation continues his series of futuristic aesthetics-oriented works which combine urban and geometrical elements in an eclectic abstract form. Mixing painted patterns with actual objects and a grid of both lines and threads installed in the space, the French artist creates a multidimensional work that plays with observers’ perspectives. Anselm Kiefer returns to the White Cube’s Bermondsey space after an absence of five years for his latest exhibition entitled Walhalla. Last week, Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga (CAC Malaga) in Spain hosted the first museum retrospective from Mark Ryden (interviewed) entitled Cámara de las Maryville. Upcoming: Fulvio Di Piazza – “Entangled” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

On January 7th, Fulvio Di Piazza will be opening a solo show at Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York entitled Entangled. The Italian artist is known for his anthropomorphized landscapes where mountains and forests come together to form surreal shapes of things like human faces, whales, and other creatures. These images are often accented by the smoke and fire of volcanic activity, giving his oil paintings a dark dystopian atmosphere. Discuss Fulvio Di Piazza here.

Tonight in Los Angeles, Nucleus Gallery will be hosting a new exhibition from Junko Mizuno entitled Takarabune. The solo from the Japanese artist continues her exploration of the pop culture and the spiritual aspects of her country with an emphasis on the Seven Lucky Gods, as referenced by the title of her show. A collection of hand-made head dresses and accessories inspired by Mizuno’s paintings by artist Alston Stephanus will also be on display during the opening. Discus Junko Mizuno here.
