Basel Week ’16 / Openings: Wynwood Walls Exhibition

In addition to the new murals (covered) painted at Wynwood Walls for this year’s Basel Week Miami, Goldman Global Arts also opened an exhibition at the Garden House in the complex. The group show featured original paintings and sculptural works from many of the artists who have been involved with Wynwood Walls in the past. Currently at Deitch Projects in New York through December 23rd, Ai Weiwei has an immersive installation on view entitled Laundromat. Continuing to address the refugee crisis in Europe, the Chinese artist (once a refugee himself) has filled the large space with garments, shoes, and personal effects that he acquired from the refugee camps housing Syrian immigrants near the border of Greece, along with snippets of media coverage and photos he took. Gee Vaucher has recently opened an exhibition entitled Introspective at Firstsite in Colchester. This is the first major show of her art in the UK and it spans the last 50 years of the multi-disciplinary artist’s practice. The work from the first half of her career is characterized by searing political satire, which was intended as a force for social change. Mode 2 opened a new exhibition, Preludes, at Galerie Openspace in Paris last Saturday. The title refers to those moments of heightened anticipation when waiting for something exceptional, like when a beat is about to drop or a B-boy is swaggering onto the stage. If the Art Basel Miami Beach (covered) is considered the main event every year during Basel Week Miami, then NADA Miami Beach is certainly the much-awaited encore (Art Basel typically opens on Weds to VIPs and NADA opens the next morning on Thurs.). Following the success of previous events in Miami in 2015 (covered) and New York in 2016 (covered), London will be the first European city to host immersive art and music event No Commission presented by The Dean Collection & Bacardi from December 8-10. Coinciding with the Amsterdam Art Weekend, Grimm Gallery opened Dustin Yellin’s show 10Parts on November 25th. With a twenty-foot long modular glass landscape across ten panels as the showpiece, this is the American artist’s first solo exhibition with the gallery and will stay on view through the 7th of January. On December 10th, beinArt Gallery will be opening a new three person show entitled Myth and Mutation featuring the work of Adrian Cox, Christopher Ulrich, and Amanda Sage. We are looking forward to Cox’s lush paintings in particular, featuring his grotesque humanoid forms which appear to be created from amalgamations of the natural world and other organic material. On December 16th, Mark Ryden (interviewed) will be opening a major exhibition at the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga (CAC Malaga) entitled Cámara de las Maravilla. (for which a replica of the invitation was recently release as a print) Translated as House of Wonders, the exhibition will be the first museum retrospective in Europe for the man known as one of the giants in the Lowbrow art movement.
