Releases: Ron English – “Temporal Boxing Brain”

Earlier this month, Ron English (featured) intruded something new produced by ToyQube entitled Temporal Boxing Brain. Based on one of the NY-based artist’s paintings, the sculptural release is a good example of his wit as well as penchant for creative remixing of common items and pop culture. Priced at $179.95, you can add it to your collection by heading over here. Discuss Ron English here.

Showing: Invader – “Wipe Out” @ The Qube (Hong Kong)

Showing through the end of this weekend is a show entitled Wipe Out from Invader in Hong Kong at The Qube, PMQ (35 Aberdeen Street, Central). The title of the exhibition is in reference to the extremely efficient and quick removal of 90% of his famed tiled creations from the streets of the metropolis by cleaning crews after getting up earlier there this year (here & here). Part of the work on display is a re-creation of these pieces and the photo documentation of their brief existence in the wild. […]

Showing: KAWS @ ArtZuid 2015

As we previously shared with you, KAWS currently has three sculptures set up in a public space around south Amsterdam. As a part of this year’s ArtZuid 2015 project, the NY-based artist was given one of the most prestigious locations for an iteration of his Along The Way sculptures, previously seen at his show with Mary Boone Gallery (covered). Exhibiting in a different colorway than the one shown in NYC, these two wooden companions measuring an impressive 216 x 176 x 120 inches are located in the middle of Museum Square, […]

Audrey Kawasaki, Andrew Hem, Mari Inukai Murals @ Worcester Museum (Part I)

With the Samurai! show (co-curated by Eric Nakamura, editor and founder of Giant Robot Magazine) at the Worcester Art Museum in Massachusetts now open to the public, the artists invited to paint murals for the exhibition were able to start their efforts last week. One of the artists invited, Andrew Hem, has created large scale public art in the past, but the other two, Audrey Kawasaki and Mari Inukai were not as experienced with mural painting. Judging from these photos, the two ladies more than held their own. Photos credit: Worcester Museum. […]

Chris Burden 1946 – 2015

The art world was saddened today to hear that Chris Burden had passed away at home earlier this morning after an 18 month fight with melanoma. He was 69. Although probably best known for his iconic Urban Light installation (seen above) at the LACMA, the American artist working in performance, sculpture, and installation art was at his most provocative early in his career with a series of performances where personal danger was the theme including shooting himself in the arm, being kicked down two flights of stairs, starving […]

Upcoming: Eloy Morales – “About Head” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

On May 16th, the 529 West 20th Street location of Jonathan LeVine Gallery will be hosting a set of new works from Eloy Morales collectively entitled About Head. The Madrid-based artist’s raw hyper-realistic portraiture is a sight to behold, but even more so in person when the scale is fully appreciated. Morales will be attending the opening so stop by for a chat if you are in the area. Discuss Eloy Morales here.

Previews: Travis Louie – “Archive of Lost Species” @ Roq La Rue

Tonight in Seattle (May 7th), Travis Louie (interviewed) will be revisiting Roq La Rue for another showing of his vintage photography inspired paintings of imaginary creatures, created in a style self-described as a kind of “cryptozoology.” Entitled Archive of Lost Species, the fresh new pieces are a collection of fantastical characters, unique in their size and circumstance, many posing next to their human counterparts. Head over for a look yourself if you are in the area and make sure to read the stories associated with each painting written by Louie himself. Discuss Travis […]

Previews: Luke Chueh – “Headspace” @ Rotofugi

Like his show there in 2012 (covered), the paintings from Luke Chueh’s (interviewed) upcoming show at Rotofugi were created with the location in mind. The Los Angeles-based artist has taken one of his repeating motifs and fully fleshed it out for his one and only solo exhibition of the year set to open on May 8th at the designer toy boutique in Chicago. Not only is this image of his “sad bear” taking off his head as if it was a costume revealing its true inner self (seen above […]
