Previews: Takashi Murakami @ Blum & Poe Popup Gallery (Ibiza)

This June, Blum & Poe will open a pop up gallery on Ibiza, showing exclusive new works by Takashi Murakami. The Japanese artist recently shared these in-progress photos showing his studio staff at Miyoshi Factory preparing the works. Along with new large paintings, a few sculptures will be exhibited, including one that will be placed at the entrance of a newly constructed casino on the island. Since the deadline for this project was quite short, the team had to find a faster production solution for this piece. The answer […]

Streets: Ron English (New York)

Over the weekend, Ron English (featured) made the most of his turn at the iconic Bowery & Houston wall in New York with a mural that was wheatpasted then hand finished with paint. The imagery chosen is a good representation of his work with the background being the American flag made up of modified company logos and slogans that speak to English’s satirical attack on consumerism, while the center features one of his most recognized surreal characters – the Temper Tot or “Baby Hulk.” Take a look at more photos and a […]

Update: James Jean

James Jean (interviewed) appears to be firing on all fronts as of late, working on a full range of projects, often at the same time. Just the ones that have been made public in the last several months already includes the design of a library, prints, murals, publications, art toy design, and apparel. But when it comes down to it, our first love were of course his drawings and paintings, where it all begins. Seen here is a new piece that we had to share, a […]

Upcoming: Invader – “Wipe Out” @ The Qube (Hong Kong)

After some advance street activity (covered here & here) in Hong Kong earlier this year, Invader will be returning with a show opening on May 2nd at The Qube, PMQ (35 Aberdeen Street, Central). Entitled Wipe Out, the exhibition (presented by the Hong Kong Contemporary Art Foundation [HOCA] & Le French May) will be the French mosaic specialist’s first solo in HK. The title of the show comes from the famed street artist’s experience with his work earlier this year in HK where 90% of his pieces were removed by cleaning […]

Openings: Patrick Martinez – “FORBIDDEN FRUIT” @ New Image Art

Last week at New Image Art in Los Angeles, the versatile Patrick Martinez unveiled new mixed media works with a show entitled FORBIDDEN FRUIT. The fresh work combines his signature neon light technique with sculpture & painting, taking inspiration from things like hip hop and minority culture. Examples include guns mingling and appearing with common place items like fruits highlighted by neon lights, or imagery products are placed on the wall like strange hybrids – all giving insight into Martinez’s artistic vision. Dabs Myla x MTV Movie Awards

For those who missed the MTV Movie Awards last weekend, Dabs Myla has sent us some images from the event. The Australian husband and wife duo took it to another level with the some of the branding of the show as well as creating on site installations, murals, and sculptural elements much like KAWS did for the VMA’s back in 2013 (covered). The set design was inspired by the artists’ travels and the cities they have visited, but the recreated city was meant to bring up memories of any major American […]

Basel Week HK ’15: Art Basel Hong Kong – (Part II)

One of the great things about Art Basel Hong Kong is the fact that galleries and artists alike make moves in consideration of the Asian markets they are showcasing in. Every year we get to feast our eyes on blue chip Asian artists such as Takashi Murakami, Yoshitomo Nara, Yue Minjun, Liu Wei, Yayoi Kusama, Mr. (pictured above), Cai Guo Qiang and Zhang Xiaogang, exhibiting besides some of the western world’s most coveted names such as Jean Michel Basquiat, KAWS, Keith Haring,  Ed Ruscha, Andy Warhol, […]

Openings: ROA – “Metazoa” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

After our interview & studio visit with the Belgium-based ROA ahead of his solo in New York, we attended the opening to see the results of his hard work over the last month crafting and painting a new body of work entitled Metazoa. The show at Jonathan LeVine Gallery’s  529 West 20th Street location featured the prolific street artist’s familiar animal imagery painted on found objects with clever interactive panels or different point of views that highlight different anatomic systems in each of his subjects. Take a look at the photos […]

Basel Week HK ’15: Art Basel Hong Kong – (Part I)

The Basel Art Fair circuit is pretty clear cut when it comes to scheduling for its mainstay fairs around the world. Art Basel takes Europe in June, Art Basel Miami takes hold of North America in December and Asia circles the calendar in May for the art world to visit Art Basel Hong Kong. But this year, the folks in charge of Art Basel shook things up and moved the fair to March. AM recently visited Hong Kong to catch the event in Hong Kong at […]

Opening: Revok – “Los Angeles” @ Library Street Collective (LA)

Last week, fans of Revok witnessed the opening of his first solo show in LA at a popup space hosted by the Library Street Collective. Entitled simply and appropriately Los Angeles, the new body of work marked a homecoming for the local graffiti legend and consisted of a series of assemblage works which proved to be created with a further refinement in his technique and vision. Hand cutting wood pieces and putting together complex geometric shapes, the composition is then painted over in patterns that draw their influences from […]
