Previews: BEYOND THE STREETS (Los Angeles)

On May 6th, BEYOND THE STREETS will open its doors in Los Angeles (1667 N Main St), an immersive survey of graffiti and street art, the likes of which haven’t been seen since Art in the Streets (covered) in 2011. This is not surprisingly seeing as Roger Gastman was an associate curator of that show back then at the MOCA, and will be the main curator of this new exhibition. Working with a roster of over 100+ artists, 40,000+ sq. ft. of industrial indoor and outdoor space has been converted […]

Frieze Week NYC ’18: First Look

With the Frieze Art Fair opening in New York this week, AM made the trek out to Randall’s Island to see what the contemporary art world had to offer. Featuring 190 galleries from 30 countries and a new layout, the event certainly had something for all art lovers out there, no matter their taste. Here is a first look at some of the artists, works, and booths that caught our eye as we braved the heat to bring photos for your perusal.

Streets: PichiAvo (Lisbon)

While in town for their current solo show at Underdogs Gallery (more on this later), PichiAvo completed a stunning new mural near the Santa Apolónia railway station utilizing their signature palette. Soaring high into the urban landscape, the multi-story mural from the Spanish duo features their signature remix of ancient Greek and Roman sculptures with their love for graffiti. With deft spraycan control, the two carefully layered urban scrawl with a classic marble bust, leading to a beautifully textured and complex wall painting. Photo credit: José […]

Upcoming: BEYOND THE STREETS (Los Angeles) – Curated by Roger Gastman

In 2011, Roger Gastman was an associate curator of Art in the Streets, the first major US museum (at MOCA) survey of graffiti and street art. As one of the world’s foremost authorities on these art forms and movements, he returns to curate a groundbreaking follow-up to the show, called BEYOND THE STREETS. The spectacular exhibition will include over 100 artists (including perhaps one very big surprise one?) showcasing paintings, sculpture, photography, and installations (including a re-creation, in partnership with adidas Skateboarding, of the famous Venice Pavilion), on more […]

Openings: Takashi Murakami – “HEADS↔HEADS” @ Galerie Perrotin (New York)

Taking over three floors of Galerie Perrotin’s New York LES location, Takashi Murakami’s latest show was unveiled last night to the delight of his fans. Entitled HEADS↔HEADS, the body of work on display was dominated by a series of paintings inspired by the work of Francis Bacon as well as a monumental 33 feet long piece that was a homage to Japanese artist Soga Shohaku. Rounding out the exhibition from the Japanese artist was a room of studies and blueprint concept sketches that gave a glimpse into his creative process. Artwork ©2018 Takashi Murakami/Kaikai […]

Previews: Camille Rose Garcia – “The Wonderful World of Dr. Deekay” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Following up on her show in 2016 (covered here & here), Camille Rose Garcia will be opening her solo soon in downtown Los Angeles at Corey Helford Gallery on May 12th entitled The Wonderful World of Dr. Deekay. As referenced by the title of the exhibition, the work centers around imagery from her new illustrated dystopian novel and stop motion animation documenting the horror of her real life dental experience of enduring “11 root canals, a full mouth reconstruction, gum surgery, and finally a bad reaction to an anti-anxiety pill […]

Art Focus: Stephen Fox

Fascinated by the play of light within the nighttime landscape ever since he was a young boy, Stephen Fox has taken that interest and translated it into a career of painting. In particular, we were drawn to the Brooklyn-based artist’s The Drive-Ins series of works that depict various nostalgic scenes of outdoor theaters steeped with an air of mystery. Interestingly enough, a good number of these pieces seem to have made it into the hands of producers, which makes sense due to the subject matter, including Larry Mark (producer […]
