Recap: Matzu // Tomokazu Matsuyama – “Afternoon Delight” @ Arsham Fieg Gallery

Recently in New York, a new showing from Tomokazu Matsuyama (interviewed) finished its run at Arsham Fieg Gallery entitled Afternoon Delight. Displayed in the concept space on the second floor of KITH’s new flagship store, the new body of work featured the New York artist’s vibrant and colorful paintings as well as a sculptural piece that sees influence and techniques from both from his Japanese roots and American cultural upbringing. This particular exhibition looked to include more provocative themes and was “an exploration of how different social and cultural changes […]

Upcoming: “Art Is Where The Heart Is” @ Galerie Droste (Paris Popup)

Starting tonight (February 2nd), Galerie Droste will be opening a two part exhibition entitled Art Is Where The Heart Is with volume two opening on February 15th. Heading to Paris (12 rue Commines, 75003) for the showings, the Wuppertal, Germany-based gallery has assembled an interesting list of artists who have made their names on the streets and transitioned to the more traditional art world with the first set of participants more rooted in the graffiti scene and the second set of artists focused on a more figurative mode […]

Previews: David Lyle – “Don’t Quit Your Day Job” @ Lyons Wier Gallery

Tomorrow night (February 1st), Lyons Wier Gallery will be hosting the opening for Don’t Quit Your Day Job, David Lyle’s latest solo with the New York showspace. The new paintings stay true to the Brooklyn-based artist’s sardonic sense of humor with him re-imagining famous artists working side jobs to support their passion for art, something mirrored in his own life. Rendered like the photos from the 1950s, 60s, and 70s that he collects, Lyle’s pieces are created with a time-consuming process starting with black paint and then slowly […]

Streets: Banksy (UK)

Over the weekend, the ever elusive Banksy unveiled a new piece in East Yorkshire in the city of Hull. Stenciled on what looks to be a permanently raised abandoned drawbridge, the image of a boy with a colander helmet can be seen with a cape and sword with the words DRAW THE RAISED BRIDGE! Believed to be a piece with anti-Brexit leanings, the Bristol-based street artist is once again stirring up the pot with placement in a city that predominantly backed the UK leaving the […]

Showing: Ryan McGinley – “Paradiso” @ Ratio 3

Currently at Ratio 3 in San Francisco, Ryan McGinley has on view his latest showing with the gallery entitled Paradiso. The new set of photos from the New York-based artist are prime examples of his signature aesthetic, celebrations of the human form in stunning natural settings. His latest works are the result of photography sessions in upstate New York during the winter and fall seasons, what look to be worthy additions to his much loved Road Trip series. Previews / Interviews: Logan Hicks – “Nightcrawlers and Lightseekers” @ Galerie Openspace

Ahead of his upcoming show, Nightcrawlers and Lightseekers, opening at Galerie Openspace in Paris on the 3rd of February, stencil genius Logan Hicks was interviewed by NY based curator, writer and author Lori Zimmer hitting topics like his past 20 years as an artist and the background for his new exhibition. Lori Zimmer (LZ): You’re known for pushing the simple technique of stenciling to incredible, photorealistic lengths. Can you explain how you achieve such incredible detail with stencil and spray paint? Logan Hicks (LH): I guess that for me, I […]

Eighteen Gallery in Copenhagen just opened Interior, their first solo show with Todd James, featuring new paintings depicting vibrant indoor spaces. After three exhibitions with the gallery’s “big brother” V1 gallery, the NYC-based artist presented his latest body of work in their clean white cube space in the former meatpacking district, ranging from smaller studies on paper, to massive, billboard size canvases. The entire show developed from earlier where James started incorporating more and more elaborate interior elements around his images. Basing some of the […]

Highlights: London Art Fair 2018

The 30th anniversary edition of the London Art Fair opened to the public on Wednesday with 131 exhibitors participating. Traditionally focused on British Modern and Contemporary Art, the fair’s outlook is becoming increasingly global. AM understands that a quarter of the galleries this year are based outside the UK. This evolution is not too surprising and may be welcomed by many as a breath of fresh air. But it also results in a certain loss of identity or distinctiveness. And in today’s art fair environment, that’s […]

Showing: Andrew Schoultz – “lluminated Opposition” @ Hosfelt Gallery

On view thru this Saturday at Hosfelt Gallery in San Francisco is Illuminated Opposition, a new solo exhibition from Andrew Schoultz. The transformative showing from the Los Angeles-based artist continues his socio-political commentary with a series of paintings set among an immersive installation of wall murals and sculptural pieces. Seen are his familiar patterns and motifs including repeating images of eyes, skulls, horses, ships, and other signs of the illuminati. Discuss Andrew Schoultz here.

Kazuhiro Tsuji – Mark Ryden Sculpture

Continuing his uncanny ability to capture the human form with his artistic touch, Kazuhiro Tsuji recently revealed his newest sculpture at the Copro Gallery booth during the LA Art Show. Joining a series of works from the Japanese sculptor that has included famed artists like Andy Warhol, Salvador Dali, Frida Kahlo, and Robert Crumb is a larger-than-life head of the legendary Mark Ryden. Perched precariously on a big eye, perhaps a referencing one of the key features of the lowbrow luminary’s work, is a mind-blowingingly accurate replication […]
