ArtPadSF ’12 – “Highlights”

ArtPadSF hosted its second annual boutique art fair over the weekend, which coincides with ArtMrkt and SFFAF. Unlike your traditional art fair with booths, this one takes over the Phoenix Hotel in the heart of the Tenderloin District in San Francisco with each gallery taking up their own room in the hotel, which gives a more laid-back pop-up gallery vibe. Throughout the weekend, various programming (lectures, music performances, panel discussions) took place in the courtyard as well as in the bar of the hotel. The fair […]

ArtMRKT San Francisco ’12 – “Highlights”

artMRKT is one of the art fairs taking place in San Francisco over the weekend, with over 70 modern and contemporary galleries at the Concourse Exhibition Center. AM was able to check out Thursday evening’s preview, which was fully catered with mini-corndogs, cocktail shrimp, mozzarella and booze – the perfect mixture to get you in the mood for buying art! A few gems were on display, which included new works from Jonathan Viner (Sloan Art), Evan B Harris (Red Truck Gallery), Brendan Monroe (Park Life), […]

Openings: Sam Wolfe Connelly – “Semiprecious” @ Spoke Art

Last Saturday evening, Spoke Art hosted Washington DC-based artist Sam Wolf Connelly’s first solo exhibition. The show is entitled Semiprecious, with the works having the narrative of being left behind because of flaws, for something more special and perfect. The significance of the gems in his work represents someone trying to steal back what they’ve lost, but ending up digging themselves in a hole that they cannot get out of (like ending up in a mineshaft and being stuck with nothing but gems and soot). […]

Releases / Teasers: Josh Keyes – “Scorch I” @ Sink or Swim Benefit Show (San Francisco)

After almost three years of tireless wishful thinking and outspoken groveling amongst diehard Josh Keyes collectors, Scorch I will finally see a print release this coming weekend. Originally exhibited at SCOPE NY in 2009, the painting, along with another now iconic work, really turned heads at the fair and marked a fairly sizable conceptual and technical leap forward, converting casual observers into permanent admirers of Josh’s work. Adding to the lore of it all, the paintings were released on a first-come, first-serve basis by David B […]

Openings: Handiedan, Craww, Charmaine Olivia & Tatiana Suarez @ Spoke Art

Last Thursday evening, Spoke Art hosted the opening of an exhibition featuring 4 artists from different parts of the globe: Handiedan (Amsterdam), Craww (UK), Charmaine Olivia (San Francisco) and Tatiana Suarez(New York). Although each of the artists’ techniques and styles vary greatly, it is very interesting to see how they each interpret the common subject matter of the female form. To coincide with the opening of the show, Spoke Art also released a new giclee from each of the artists (which were also on display […]

Highlights: ArtPadSF, San Francisco

San Francisco, last weekend, hosted a slew of fine art fairs around the city. One noteworthy fair was the inaugural edition of ArtPadSF (held at the legendary Phoenix Hotel in the Tenderloin), which focused mainly on Bay Area galleries that feature contemporary and emerging art. Each room of the hotel featured a different gallery’s display and the lounge played host to panel discussions on art. Some of the galleries that had a room at the fair included: White Walls, Gallery Anno Domani, 111 Minna, Spoke […]

Openings: Rod Luff – “The Moleskine Project” @ Spoke Art

Australian-based artist Rod Luff’s exhibition, The Moleskin Project (previewed) opened last Thursday, which also signified the first show put on at Spoke Art in San Francisco. As the title of the exhibition suggests, the show is comprised of framed and unframed pages taken from Rod’s moleskin that contained an array of oil paintings, studies, thoughts and sketches that he produced in his spare time over the course of a year. Some of the pieces served as studies for later works and others were simply just ideas […]

Preview: Rod Luff – “The Moleskine Project” @ Spoke Art

With two successful group shows at bicoastal pop-up galleries already under their belt, Bad Dads and Quentin vs. Coen, our friends at Spoke Art have put the finishing touches on their homebase in San Francisco and will be officially opening their doors for the first time this week. Opening Thursday, May 5th, Rod Luff will take the stage to kick things off proper with The Moleskine Project, where an entire Moleskine notebook (a favorite of artists) has been filled from cover to cover by the […]
