Shepard Fairey x Dave Chappelle @ Radio City Music Hall

Eight years after comedy giant Dave Chapelle walked off the set of the third season the Chappelle’s Show and into the veil of private life, he made a triumphant return to the spotlight of the Big Apple at the historic Radio City Music Hall recently. To commemorate this event, Chapelle commissioned artist Shepard Fairey to create unique artwork for the show. AM was lucky enough to attend a fun night filled with comedy and music as Kanye West also made a surprise performance for the pumped […]

Rewind: Jun 15 – Jul 6

As we share another Rewind feature with you today, you’ll notice the collection of art related videos headlined by a trailer for documentary titled Tim’s Vermeer (via Colossal). The film follows the attempts of a computer graphics specialist, who has no background in art, to duplicate a painting by Vermeer by recreating the room and props the Dutch painter used. Then, the premise that Vermeer used mechanical means to assist in his paintings can be put to the test. Take a look at the intriguing video […]

JR – “Women Are Heroes” Container Ship

Over the weekend, JR (interviewed) launched a pretty special project from Port of Le Havre, France – a 365 meter long container ship, the CMA CGM MAGELLAN, pasted with his iconic eye motif. Working on over 151 containers, the French artist used them as pixels to recreate the eyes of Elizabeth, a Kenyan woman living in the Kibera slums, in Nairobi from his Women Are Heroes series of works. The vessel leaving the port will mark the end of this series that he started in 2007 (see below) and […]

Openings: 2501 – “Nomadic Experiment” @ Soze Gallery

After traveling around the world, creating public works in remote places, being involved in mural festivals, and working on various conceptual projects, 2501 is brought his experiences and elements from his travels to Soze Gallery through the Nomadic Experiment solo show. As an essential part of his ongoing Nomadic Experience Project, this show presents the works he has been working on between and while on the road. While having a firmly formed visual language in place, consisting of peculiar line work and strictly geometric use of gold leaf, […]

Spaces: The KAWS Studio

Followers of KAWS and his pop culture infused abstractions have always been impressed with his clean lifework and impeccable attention to detail. Taking a look at his Brooklyn studio, designed by Wonderwall in 2013, one can see similarities in the street turned contemporary artist’s taste in architecture. The light-infused and wide open work space will definitely come in handy as he prepares for his show in Los Angeles, coming up in a couple months. Via Hypebeast. Discuss KAWS here.

Streets: D*Face (Hong Kong)

During our time in Hong Kong for Basel HK, one of the outdoor treats we saw were the works of British artist D*Face (interviewed). Although he was only in town for a few weeks to installing his exhibition at Above Second Gallery (covered), it’s astonishing how the artist managed to fit in time for some work on the streets in the bustling city where East meets West. Oh, did we mention that it was pouring rain almost every day during the trip? Quite a feat in the […]

Take a look at this in-studio shot of the work in progress… Discuss KAWS here.

Studio Visits: Faile – “Fuel, Fantasy, Freedom” @ Gallery Ernst Hilger

A month ago, AM stopped by the Brooklyn studio space of Faile to catch a glimpse of their upcoming show at Gallery Ernst Hilger which opens tomorrow, July 2nd in Austria. Entitled Fuel, Fantasy, Freedom, this fresh body of work continues to push the boundaries defined by the collective. The show focuses on the pure imaginative energy that comes from childhood fantasies – stories and themes such as racing stock cars and flying rocket ships to realms filled with unicorns and beasts. Diverse in technique and mediums, this […]

Streets / World Tour: Jeff Soto (Bordeaux, France)

Southern California native, Jeff Soto (interviewed), recently traveled to Bordeaux, France where he had a chance to work on several art-related projects. First up is this wall he painted for the Darwin project and Spacejunk, his fourth mural in France (also see Lyon here & here). The Riverside-based artist took care to incorporate local graffiti into his mural featuring some old school imagery, expertly painting on the difficult corrugated siding. In the back, he also took 20 mins to do some quick lettering, getting back to […]
