Upcoming: Saber – “Ugly American” @ The Outsiders (Newcastle)

It looks like the next showing for SABER (interviewed) after his big exhibition in New York (covered) earlier this year will be at The Outsiders in Newcastle – opening to the public on September 6th. Entitled Ugly American, the American graffiti artist’s European solo debut will feature urban depictions of both the American flag and of the Union Jack. He explains the show title as “a reference to the excesses, and foul nature, that some believe Americans possess. Obviously this has similarities to modern Britain too, but… I come […]

Rewind: Aug 12 – Aug 18

This week’s Rewind feature is headlined by the trailer for a new film coming out later this year called The Monuments Men. The movie stars George Clooney, Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett, and others as a group of museum directors, curators, and historians going behind enemy lines in Nazi Germany to rescue artworks. Take a look at the trailer below… Other worthy videos include: Jim Houser creating an installation for the Black Book Gallery. A video of Shepard Fairey when he was in Denver for a group […]

Streets: Interesni Kazki (Moscow)

Ukrainian artists and muralist Waone and Aec, known as Interesni Kazki, recently took part in the LGZ Moscow project where they worked on two separate surrealistic murals. Waone did a piece called Flying & Crawling mind at Lublinskaya Str.3, while Aec worked on his Time Machine mural in Sadovnicheskaya  Str. 78, Moscow. Covering the era of the dinosaurs, constellations, age of big discoveries, technical progress and weapons development, Aec’s mural shows the history of the planet, and the big influence that humans have over all of it. On the other hand, Waone’s mural is the artist’s […]

Streets: Nychos & DXTR (Copenhagen)

If you remember, last year we brought you a look at some of the public works painted for the Galore Festival in Copenhagen. Times flies as the 2013 version is already upon us. First up is a collaborative effort from Nychos & DXTR where they melded their styles together for this mural. Check out more action shots and a closer look at the details in the photoset below… Photo credit: Henrik Haven. Discuss Nychos here.

Preview: David Choe – “Snowman Monkey BBQ” @ Museo Universitario del Chopo

American artist David Choe (featured) has spent the last several weeks working on his exhibition opening August 17th at the Museo Universitario del Chopo. This is his first big solo show after four years of “falling deep into addiction, heartbreak, rejoicing, discovery, recovery, hallucinogenics, worship and ignorant idiotic prophecies,” so there is a lot he wanted to create and share. From the title Snowman Monkey BBQ, which takes inspiration from the words that Chinese gamblers scream in casinos, to painting with Pedro Friedeberg, this show is 100% driven by […]

Streets: Cyrcle. – “Capture The Flag!” @ Walk & Talk Festival (Azores Islands)

Recently, Los Angeles art collective Cyrcle. spent time in Portugal for their latest exhibition titled “Capture the Flag! : Conquer the Divide!” (covered). However, they also participated in the Walk & Talk Azores Festival, which featured a great variety of both Portuguese and international artists such as Vhils, El Tono, Nespoon and Topo. Cyrcle. certainly didn’t waste any time while they were in Azores and as we can see from this mural, their style continues to evolve both in style and in theme. Touching on the subject of the […]

Showing: Kenny Scharf – “Pop Renaissance” @ Honor Fraser

We recently stopped by Honor Fraser in Los Angeles to take in the current showing from Kenny Scharf (interviewed) entitled Pop Renaissance. Split into separate rooms, the two body of works exhibited are well demarcated by both content and space. One room features some newer works inspired by Scharf’s love for the Flintstones while the other section hosted work from when he covered the ceiling of the Palazzo Communale in Italy over a decade ago (the silkscreened canvases were then painted over with his iconic characters at […]

Showing: Titi Freak – “In A Dream” @ Black Book Gallery

Earlier this month, the Black Book Gallery in Denver opened In A Dream, a new solo from Titi Freak. Sending over works from Brazil, the artist known for his street art made his heritage and his two years apprenticing in Japan count by letting their influence shine through. The new body of work is centered around a large 10 panel wood piece featuring a koi fish, and supported by loose portraits as well as a wall of leaves. Take a look at more photos from the exhibition below… Photos via […]

Petition To Repaint “FREE MANDELA” Slogan In Cape Town

The South Africa-based Faith47 has started a petition to gain permission to repaint the iconic”FREE MANDELA” slogan in Capetown. As part of the anti-graffiti bylaw that has been passed, many of the historic artworks on the streets have been buffed, leading to a loss of some of the important cultural relics of those tumultuous times. Check out the petition here and support it with a signature if it so moves you.

Upcoming: KAWS @ Galerie Perrotin (New York)

For those of you who like to plan your art calendar a little in advance, a trip to New York (if you aren’t in the area) may need to be arranged if you are a KAWS fan. Although he has had some pretty high profile projects (MTV & Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade) and shows around the world (Switzerland, Japan, Paris, Hong Kong) in the interim, stateside admirers of his work haven’t seen a proper exhibition since early last year in Atlanta. So there is much to celebrate […]
