Streets: WK Interact – “Project Brave”

Over the weekend, New Yorker’s received a new mural to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of 9/11, courtesy of WK Interact. Project Brave is a huge 328 foot wall piece located on Kent Avenue (between North 4th & North 5th Streets) that paid tribute to the firefighters and memorialized the tragedy through the kinetic imagery of the NY-based street artist and will be on display until October 11th. Fame Festival ’11: Escif

Escif recently made the stop in Grottaglie for some last minute additions as the Fame Festival opening will roll around in the next couple weeks (see other artists who have already have done their part here). In addition to this giant tiger, the Spanish street artist also worked on some walls with his signature characters as well as a text-based piece. More after the jump…

Openings: LUDO – “Metamorphosis” @ High Roller Society

Opening his first solo exhibition in London over the weekend, LUDO (interviewed) yet again showed his artistic dexterity in multiple mediums at High Roller Society. Much like his Zurich solo back in April, Metamorphosis (previewed) offered an strong selection of large graphite and oil drawings, focusing on his signature weaponized insects. Preferring to work on paper, these large scale works illustrate the French artist’s deft drawing abilities and provide reference to the massive paper wheatpastes he utilizes for his street work. Streets: Mentalgassi for Getxo Photo 2011 (Spain)

For this fifth edition of the festival dedicated to photography, GETXOPHOTO, that takes place in Spain, Berlin collective Mentalgassi decided to create four spherical portraits and float them in the sea. Known for creatively wheatpasting over existing urban objects, this time they decided to take control of the entire process to produce these “elderly swimmers.” Take a look at more photos as well as video from Fermin Aio and Aitor Gisasola after the jump…

Streets: El Mac – “Spirit of Summer” (Canada)

As summer is drawing to an end, AM thought we would draw attention to this mural from Los Angeles-based El Mac, who recently visited one of his favorite cities, Montreal, Canada. Entitled Spirit of Summer, this piece is an interpretation of a young Rose Phillips, the namesake of the neighborhood this is in, Rosemont. As you saw in our London Instagram Roundup last week, Phlegm was in London recently and painted some of the walls of the Foundry Building on Old Street with his signature characters. It looks like the Sheffield-based street muralist hasn’t finished with Shoreditch yet as he recently added this airship piece at the Zetland House to the long list of fantastical vessels he’s painted in the past, although this time he’s taking to the skies instead of to the water. The MTV Staying Alive Foundation will be holding a benefit art auction and exhibition entitled RE:DEFINE to mark the 30th anniversary of the discovery of the AIDS virus. We’ve already shown you the walls that Blu and Ethos painted for the CityLeaks Festival in Germany, but it looks like it’s time for a summary of some of the rest of the participants. As we have become accustomed to, street artists Faith47 and DAL worked on murals with religious overtones and frenetic energy respectively. Belgium-based ROA brought his new skinned animal concepts from indoors to outdoors. Swoon – “Anthropocene Extinction” @ ICA Boston

As we previewed the installation process a couple weeks back, Swoon (interviewed) has now completed her site-specific installation Anthropocene Extinction for The Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston (ICA).
