Previews: “NY Ink” @ Wooster Street Social Club

Many tattoo fans who have followed LA Ink & Miami Ink probably already know that tonight will be the series premiere of NY Ink. And, as the title indicates, this spinoff is set in the Big Apple. For all you art lovers, there’s an additional reason aside from the sick tattoos and drama to check out this show – amazing art. Earlier this year AM was tapped to help curate the inaugural season of the show. Artwork from artists such as Shepard Fairey, Audrey Kawasaki, […]

Preview / Video: Logan Hicks @ Opera Gallery (NY)

Tonight in New York, June 2nd, stencil specialist Logan Hicks (interviewed) will be opening his show Pretty Ugly at the Opera Gallery. Almost a year since we witnessed his last solo in Paris, the bearded one has a whole intricate new body of work prepared for fans in his home city. Featuring some of his largest pieces to date, he has pushed himself creatively, mentally, and has been taken to the limits of his technique for six months straight, so we will be looking forward […]

Teaser: Nathan Ota & RISK @ 111 Minna

Continuing an unlikely collaboration that started at the Hurley Space last October (covered), Nathan Ota and graf legend RISK will be opening a show together on July 7th at 111 Minna in San Francisco. In actuality, their partnership started decades ago in the graffiti scene with time and distance leading them down different paths. In the end, mutual friends and the power of the internet brought them back together and it looks like they are making up for lost time. While most collaborations, in our […]

Openings: Keith Haring @ Gladstone Gallery

Currently showing at Gladstone Gallery until July 1st, the late Keith Haring’s first exhibition with the NY showspace features never before seen works on paper. Interestingly enough, three of the large scale pieces included were created in conjunction with a series of Bill T. Jones performances held in 1982 at The Kitchen, which were executed in real time during Jones’ dances with the sound of the brushstrokes serving as the only thing the audience heard. Rounding out the exhibition are a selection of Haring’s early […]

Interviews: Neck Face @ Levi’s Workshop (MOCA)

Last Sunday, AM dropped by the Levi’s Film Workshop, where they were screening the trailer for Born Under a Bad Sign, a film in progress by artist Neck Face and director Isaiah Seret. The upcoming feature-length kung fu horror movie, starring the artist was filmed in his alleyway installation at MOCA’s Art in the Streets exhibition. Those who attended the screening also got to see an extended fight scene (censored for museum audiences) which ended in co-star, Mindy Kelly, being decapitated. Neck Face tossed back […]

If you enjoyed the first video documenting the behind-the-scenes action from this year’s POW WOW event (covered), you’ll like part two in the series from Hypebeast TV and Mikey Inouye. Included in the footage are scenes from opening night as well as interviews with Will Barras, Wu Yue, and Suitman as they explained the thoughts behind their artwork. If you like what you see, you can help make next year’s POW WOW happen by supporting them through their Kickstarter page.

Openings: Miss Van – “Bailarinas” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Last Thursday, the Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York was the site of French-born and Barcelona-based Miss Van’s new body of work. One of the pioneers for women street artists in a male dominated genre, the delicate yet strong characters that she paints have always made an impression with their uninhibited sexuality and freedom of expression.  For this show Bailarinas, her masked sensual and sultry “poupee” characters in various states of undress seem to have taken on the role of provocative dancers. Take a look at some […]

Showing: “Memories of King Kowloon” @ ArtisTree (Hong Kong)

We touched on the life and “career” of the late Tsang Tsaou Choi, or the self-styled “King of Kowloon” back in 2009 when his work achieved a nice hammer price at auction. For those still lingering in Hong Kong after the close of Art HK, perhaps now is a good time to revisit his work seeing that there is a show at the ArtisTree venue located in HK. Entitled Memories of King Kowloon, the exhibition features original work from the OG “street artist” who spent […]

Highlights: ArtPadSF, San Francisco

San Francisco, last weekend, hosted a slew of fine art fairs around the city. One noteworthy fair was the inaugural edition of ArtPadSF (held at the legendary Phoenix Hotel in the Tenderloin), which focused mainly on Bay Area galleries that feature contemporary and emerging art. Each room of the hotel featured a different gallery’s display and the lounge played host to panel discussions on art. Some of the galleries that had a room at the fair included: White Walls, Gallery Anno Domani, 111 Minna, Spoke […]
