Streets: Blu (Poland)

It looks like Italian street sensation Blu is not shy about letting the world know his views on religion.  First came the mural in Bologna over the Easter weekend featuring a praying man eating his own “pasta” brain, perhaps indicating religion is all created in the mind.  Now, this new piece in Krakow features a bullhorn made from a bell (maybe the famous Royal Sigismund Bell regarded as one of Poland’s national symbols?) speaking to the mindless masses. Does anyone recognize the seal? *edit* Ah, […]

Videos: POW WOW Hawai’i 2011 Part I

One of the people we connected with in Hawaii for the POW WOW event (covered) was videographer Mikey Inouye. It seemed him and his crew were everywhere at the same time documenting all the action. The fruits of their labor are now evident with this new video. In association with Hypebeast TV, this is the first in a three part series featuring footage of the setup, live painting, and interviews with the participants including founder Jasper Wong. If you like what you see, you can […]

Focus: Invader – “Art in the Streets” @ MOCA

With the MOCA’s Art in the Streets exhibition on track to potentially break attendance records and Invader’s recent LAPD arrest for making art in the streets of LA, we thought that it’s time for another Art Focus – in the form of little Easter Eggs left by our friend Invader. With all the spectacular art and installations at this exhibition, it’s easy to get lost in the thick of things. Invader took an interesting approach to making his mark at the MOCA while he stayed […]

Streets: Shepard Fairey (Chicago)

After a little down time since putting the finishing touches on his multi-wall installation of new and old stencil collage works on paper and canvas (covered) for Art in the Streets, along with a nice mural within the MOCA store (covered), Shepard Fairey (featured) made his way to the Windy City last weekend for the Art Chicago Fair. Bringing his Revolutions exhibition for the fair itself, a series of album cover art inspired mixed media works in varying formats and scale first shown in Santa […]

Openings: SABER – “The American Graffiti Artist” @ Opera Gallery (New York)

Continuing the near relentless barrage of street inspired exhibitions arranged to coincide with Art in the Streets, SABER (interviewed) opened The American Graffiti Artist (previewed) at Opera Gallery in New York last night. While his impressive efforts within MOCA (covered) paid homage to his roots within Los Angeles graffiti lore, his newest body of work riffs on a more recent manifestation. In an aesthetic chapter first penned in 2009 when he created a video for the “Organizing For America’s Health Care Reform Video Challenge” (covered) that […]

Live Painting: Futura @ CARBON

On Sunday, CARBON came to a close in Melbourne, Australia. The festival consisting of some major players in the art, style, and design fields hosted a live painting session on the final night. Among the artists represented, Futura was unquestionably the main attraction. It’s rare enough to see his work in the flesh, let alone to witness him work his magic with the can firsthand. AM was privy to just such a treat a few weeks back, as he worked his abstract wizardy on the […]

Streets: Faile – Prayer Wheel (Williamsburg)

One of the coolest examples of Faile’s outdoor works are the Prayer Wheels (featured) which first debuted at their Lost in Glimmering Shadows show in the UK. These sculptural works are engineered to spin in place while people meditated to their favorite images from the collective. In the past few years, the duo have placed these awesome pieces outdoors for the people to enjoy. Now, they’ve sent us pictures of the latest street intervention which they have deployed near McCarren Park in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Check […]

Streets / Teaser: RETNA – “Street Cred” @ Pasadena Museum of California Art

On May 14th, the Pasadena Museum of California Art opens their doors to Street Cred, an exhibition celebrating the art of graffiti, be it in it’s basic form or as a formative tool in the current career and work of fine artists. Interestingly enough, the showing was conceived of before the current Art in the Streets exhibition but was scheduled further in the future and also includes some of the artists from the MOCA. With what looks to be mainly in-state artists, the list includes […]

Update: Banksy – “Art in the Streets” @ MOCA

As anticipated, it appears Banksy headed back to MOCA over the weekend to refresh his Art in the Streets installation (covered). Perhaps most impressive is the hazmat suite clad golf pair with their golf cart taking the place of the asphalt roller, which has been moved outside and sacrificed Yogi bear into a pancaked, bloody mess. An ode to the See Saw animatronic installation setup during preparations for Marks and Stencils (covered) last winter, the gasmask wearing golfers are enjoying post-apocolyptic martinis while lining up […]
