Streets: El Mac (Mexico) Part II

A while back, we posted up some photos of a mural El Mac painted for the Seres Queridos project in Mexico. The street artist, known for his signature striation and large-scale murals recently shared new photos of another piece from the same series based on Manuel Lee Chang, known locally as “el Chino”(despite the fact that he’s of Korean descent) with his Guacamaya (Macaw). Take a look at more photos after the jump…

Openings: Date Farmers @ Ace Gallery, Wilshire Towers

The Date Farmers recently opened what is sure to be their largest and most memorable exhibition to date.  The duo of Armando Lerma and Carlos Ramirez, hailing out of the Coachella Valley, are on the ascent in their artistic career and now join such esteemed artists as Andy Warhol, Richard Serra, Robert Rauschenberg, and Carl Andre to show at Ace Gallery. Consisting of a wide range of paintings, collages, sculptures, effigies, installations, and videos, the show was at once immersive, comprehensive, and highly impressive.  The […]

Openings: Dran – ‘I Have Chalks’ @ Pictures on Walls

It’s been a busy end to the year for French artist Dran with not one but two shows held in London in association with the print house, Pictures On Walls. My Everyday Life, a show of original paintings and illustrations, along with a fine installation, opened as part of POW’s end of year extravaganza, Marks and Stencils (née Santa’s Ghetto), in London’s Soho on the 26th November and was followed a week later by the opening of the I Have Chalks print show at POW’s […]

Subliminal Projects played host to an intriguing collection of original work from artists who have been known to bend rules and break molds in their respective fields. It’s always nice to see multiple artistic movements, […]

Openings: “Dreams Deferred” @ The Chinese American Museum

Last week, the Chinese American Museum (CAM) in Los Angeles opened their doors to an art show focused on immigration reform. Although the bulk of the problems the Chinese in America have had with this topic has been in the past, it is always important to bring light to some forgotten history as there is much we can learn that we can apply to the controversial topic in the present. Dreams Deferred (teased) featured many compelling pieces from some artists that you will be sure […]

Overtime: Dec. 5 – Dec. 11

Now, the world’s most expensive book – John James Audobon’s Birds of America. Steve Martin (one of the world’s best art collectors), Shepard Fairey, Andres Serrano, and Frank Stella on Colbert Report. Jeffrey Deitch planning a Julian Schnabel retrospective at MOCA Steve Martin boring?  He talks art, interrupted because not entertaining enough, later apologized to. Lost Leonardo di Vinci manuscript fragment found in France. Ai Weiwei picked on again.  This time, China bans him from traveling to Korea.  But the good news this week is […]

Openings: “Garfield” Group Show @ The Hundreds (Pop-Up Space)

Last Thursday night, The Hundreds hosted their Garfield themed art show and celebration at a pop-up location in Santa Monica. Along with the art, there were costumed characters, a signing by Garfield creator Jim Davis, and of course, the feline’s favorite food – lasagna! Hate it or love it, it was certainly interesting to see some unexpected artists in the lineup get out of their comfort zone for some themed pieces for once. More pics after the jump via The Hundreds / Meow…

Releases: KAWS x Robert Lazzarini – “Distorted Companions”

Wow, what a stunning collaboration between Robert Lazzarini, well known for his distorted sculptures, and KAWS in what we like to call the “Distorted Companions”. Lazzarini, who you may remember recently exhibited his twisted brass knuckles alongside KAWS’ work at the It Ain’t Fair exhibition (covered) by OHWOW during Art Basel Week, is a fellow Brookylnite and seems to be a natural partner for the re-engineering of the iconic figure on its 10th anniversary. Early word (which may or may not be accurate) on these […]
