Openings: Meggs – “King for a Day” @ Above Second

Last Friday night, Above Second Gallery in Hong Kong hosted “King for a Day” (previewed), a show by the Melbourne-based Meggs. Because of the close timing of a concurrent body of work opening in Australia last week, he decided to name both shows the same, both dealing with “exploration of dualities and opposites that uses pop-culture references and symbolism to represent status, power, death and innocence in a kind of abstract and mashed up way.” The collection of paintings and prints with imagery obviously influenced […]

Openings: Pure Evil – “Strange Girls” @ Pure Evil Gallery

AM dropped in to the opening of Pure Evil’s new solo show last week at the Pure Evil Gallery, which was looking resplendent under it’s brand new gin-palace styled black and gold leaf signage. Gin & tonic was being served of course in this bastion of East London creativity, and Charley’s large scale “Strange Girls” decorated the space. It’s good to see PE’s work in his own gallery, and this exhibition signals a change in the direction his gallery work is taking. Taking a series […]

Video: Jaybo x Remi/Rough x Juice 126 – ProjectRoom

AM recently brought you details of the ProjectRoom event that Jaybo and Remi/Rough held last month in London with Juice 126. The artists combined their talents to create three collaborative pieces of work on the night. This nicely produced video gives some background of the project coming together, along with footage of the live painting itself, so now you can enjoy the fun even if you couldn’t make it. Discuss Remi/Rough here. Discuss Jaybo here.

Preview: “Survey Select”

Mark Murphy’s curated events are always a treat for us here at AM, and after his previous curatorial exploits we’ve witnessed such as his Aqua art fair exhibition during last year’s Basel Week in Miami, and of course Scribble 08, we’re looking forward to this years endeavour – “Survey Select”. Billed as a “narrative art exhibition,” Survey Select brings together the work of 65 contemporary artists in a salon style exhibition showcase. Accompanying the exhibition itself will be a series of creative workshops, film screenings […]

Openings: StolenSpace Summer Group Show

AM got to the opening of StolenSpace’s annual Summer Group Show last week to find a line of people queuing out of the door! A packed house came out to see what we found to be a very strong grouping of work from an interesting mix of artists, some old StolenSpace favorites, but a lot fresh names – some new to the gallery, and some new to the London scene. Chloe Early is one of our favorite painters from the StolenSpace roster, and her new […]

Preview: Anthony Lister – “The Beauty of Failure” @ Show & Tell Gallery

Anthony Lister’s (interviewed) adds to his ever growing list of countries exhibited in this week with the event of his solo show “The Beauty of Failure” to be held at Show & Tell Gallery in Toronto. His first time exhibiting in Canada, Lister brings a body of work that deals with the topics of reward and punishment in his own twisted pop culture style. Catch the opening on Friday, July 9th if you can, although Mr. Lister will not be in town due to a […]

Preview: Meggs – “King for a Day” @ Above Second Gallery

Our friends over at Above Second have sent over some images of Meggs working on some pieces for the opening of his show on July 9th (6pm – late). After recently opening a similarly named show “King for a Day” at his own gallery down under, the Melbourne based artist has traveled all the way to Hong Kong to showcase a new body of work. Based on the artists imagery, an appropriately named “Superhero / Super-villain’s Fantasy Afterparty” follows at the ROXIE. You can learn […]
