Streets: Swoon

It seems like it’s been a while since we have seen new work from Swoon (interviewed) in her home city but she recently put up some pieces in New York, one of which (seen after the jump) made an appearance in the “Shred” show at Perry Rubenstein (previewed). The street artist has been busy though as she made an appearance at the Fame Festival, in Zambia, as well as will be joining the impressive lineup later this month in San Diego for the show at […]

Preview: “SHRED” @ Perry Rubenstein Gallery

Perry Rubenstein Gallery, known to most readers as the gallery that represents Faile (featured), opens an exhibition curated by Carlo McCormick next month, titled “SHRED”. The show focuses on collage-based work by a diverse group of artists, ranging from fine artists to street artists, those who create subversive works on newsprint to those who animate cutout paper silhouettes. They include Bruce Connor, Jack Walls, Dash Snow, Gee Vaucher, Faile, Shepard Fairey (featured), Leo Fitzpatrick, Mark Flood, Eric Foss, Judith Supine, Swoon (interviewed), Brian Douglas aka […]

Teaser: “Viva La Revolucion” @ MCASD

San Diego, hold on to your hats because the urban art movement is about to move into your neighborhood. This summer, the MCASD will be holding an exhibition showcasing some of the best art the streets have to offer. Curated by Pedro Alonzo (who also curated Shepard Fairey’s Retrospective), the show “Viva La Revolucion – A Dialogue with the Urban Landscape” will feature some of the most respected names in the genre: Akay (Sweden), Banksy (U.K.), Blu (Italy), Mark Bradford (U.S.), William Cordova (U.S.), Date […]

Swoon & Matt Small in Zambia

Recently Swoon (interviewed), Matt Small (interviewed), Mike Snelle from Black Rat Press (interviewed), and RJ Rushmore (from Vandalog) traveled to Zambia to work with students at the Robert Shitima School. The school allows orphans and children from nearby shantytowns to get free K-9 schooling. With the help of Zamcog, they were able to give art workshops on activities such as printmaking with lino-blocks, portrait painting, and collage to 200+ students. More pics they sent us and Mike Snelle’s thoughts on the trip after the jump…

Openings: “Now’s the Time” @ Black Rat Press

As we mentioned in our preview, Black Rat Projects opened their doors a while back to a pretty impressive collection of the street scene a couple weeks ago. Just like the “Thousands” show last year, this exhibition gave fans a chance to see all their favorite street artists (including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Shepard Fairey (featured), Swoon (interviewed), Banksy, Barry Mcgee, Faile (featured) and Os Gemeos) at the same time under one roof. Other than museum shows, this is probably the only way you can […]

Events: Swoon book signing

This Saturday (May 8th, 6-9pm), Williamburg’s Urban Art Projects will host a special event to celebrate the release of Swoon’s first monograph of her work, published by Abrams. She will be signing copies of the self-titled book, which includes essays, images and thoughts, and an introduction by Jeffrey Deitch. Along with the book signing, Swoon is working with Urban Art Projects and a team of engineers and architects to produce a domed sculpture to be exhibited at Urban Art Projects’ inaugural Williamsburg Waterfront Sculpture Exhibition […]

FAME Festival ’10: Swoon

Well, shortly after announcing their lineup for 2010, this year’s FAME Festival is already underway. First to arrive were Swoon (interviewed) and Ben Wolf to participate in this annual Italian celebration of street art (take a look at our coverage of the 2009 event here). Unfortunately, Wolf’s work was destroyed before it was photographed but here are some photos of Swoon pasting up an old chapel as well as other parts of town. More images after the jump.

Next week, Black Rat Projects opens its doors to a comprehensive survey of street art spanning several decades of outdoor expression. Titled ‘Now’s the Time’ (running from April 22nd to May 20th), the show promises a chance to see many rare and never been seen before vintage works as well as more recent pieces by key artists including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Shepard Fairey (featured), Swoon (interviewed), Banksy, Barry Mcgee, Faile (featured) and Os Gemeos – pretty much a who’s who and what’s what of […]

Openings: Barnstormers @ Joshua Liner Gallery

The beautiful weather and the promise of great art seemingly brought out all the five boroughs Thursday night for the opening of the Barnstormers show at Joshua Liner Gallery. The exhibition – which was so large that it overflowed Liner’s third floor space into an entire other gallery on the floor below – leaned toward presenting individual works from the diverse group of artists, instead of toward collaborative installations as expected. Of course, pieces by stars of the original scene such as David Ellis, Swoon, […]
