Update: solidARTy.org

About month ago we introduced the new charity art auction website solidARTy.org. After a successful launch and donations by many artists from around the globe, the project seems to be growing bigger and better by the day. Adding new works on daily basis, they recently successfully auctioned works by artists like Sandra Chevrier, Isaac Cordal, Fintan Mage, Martin Whatson, and Fintan Switzer. We just wanted to give you a quick update and a reminder that all the proceeds from the sales will be forwarded to the Are You Syrious? humanitarian initiative […]

Showing: Tessar Lo – “No More Doubts, No More Fears” @ Project Gallery (Toronto)

Tessar Lo (featured) opened a solo show at the Project Gallery in Toronto earlier this month entitled No More Doubts, No More Fears. Transforming the space into his temporary studio, the locally-based artist has been sharing his work and practice with visitors since the 10th of November. The idea of such setting was to achieve a free stream-of-thought mode of creating, stripped of the classic studio working environment. By creating the works publicly, the full transparency of the process makes the intention visible both through successful and unsuccessful attempts. This intuitive […]

Streets: World Roundup (Nov 1 – Nov 22)

It’s been quite a while since our last Streets: World Roundup feature, so here are some public works that you may have missed in the last several months. Leading things off is a piece by Os Gemeos at an undisclosed location that highlights the plight of the people affected by the catastrophic dam collapse that resulted in toxic mud flow destroying Bento Rodrigues region in Brazil due to the negligence of mining company Mariana MG. Other murals the caught our eye of late include Invader (Jersey City), […]

Upcoming: Tessar Lo – “No More Doubts, No More Fears” @ Project Gallery (Toronto)

Starting on September 10th, Tessar Lo (featured) will be presenting what he describes as one of his dream shows at Project Gallery (Toronto). Entitled No More Doubts, No More Fears, the work for the exhibition will be made as he lives in the gallery from the opening until the 30th. He hopes to deal with “ideas of immigration, nesting and establishment, and the development of identity that occurs within the combination of one’s geography and cognitive state” with the new body of work. Discuss Tessar Lo here.

Openings: Tessar Lo – “Devices And The Virtues” @ Jaski Art Gallery

On the 27th of September, Jaski Gallery in Amsterdam introduced a new solo from Tessar Lo to their collectors and local art lovers. Devices And The Virtues is Lo’s third show with the gallery and it once again proved the strong connection and love between the artist and the city. For this show, the Toronto-based artist prepared several large canvases, some mid size ones, and a nice selection of drawings on paper that were displayed in an eye-catching cluster. Exploring and playing with his expressive, naive style, purposely minimizing his efforts, the […]

Previews: Tessar Lo – “Devices And The Virtues” @ Jaski Art Gallery

On September 27th, Tessar Lo (featured) will once again (see 2011, 2012) open a solo at Jaski Art Gallery in Amsterdam. The Indonesian-born and Toronto-raised painter will be bringing a new set of paintings and drawings collectively entitled Devices And The Virtues, all rendered in a colorful palette and radiating raw innocence. Seen throughout the work are common motifs like lush vegetation, jungle creatures, basketballs, boy characters, and other elements that give the new body of work coherence. Lo talks about the themes behind the new […]

Openings: Tessar Lo – “oh, ou, ohh, o” @ Cooper Cole Gallery

Tessar Lo’s (featured) newest series oh, ou, ohh, o opened last Friday at Toronto’s Cooper Cole Gallery. If you remember, we visited with Lo in his studio a couple months ago as he was preparing these new works so it was nice to see them completed and hanging together on the walls. Fans of the Toronto-based artist will note this show includes a lot of expansion for the artist including  new techniques, new themes and use of new materials. Studio Visits: Tessar Lo

A few weeks ago AM got a chance to visit with artist Tessar Lo at his Toronto studio. He was just coming off of recent group shows More Than Two (Let It Make Itself) at The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery in Toronto and Buddy System at the Breeze Block Gallery in Portland. Tessar’s process involves tapping into the unconscious, creating imagery that feels poignant despite its abstraction, using color and shape to convey unspoken meaning but maintaining a haunting familiarity. He challenges the viewer to digest the work without having something […]

Openings: “Buddy System Invitational” @ Breeze Block Gallery

Earlier this month, the Buddy System Invitational (curated by Sven Davis) opened at the Breeze Block Gallery in Portland. The group exhibition centered on the interesting concept having each of the 22 invited artists bring along a fellow artist to exhibit alongside them with each contributing one 16 x 20″ & one 8 x 8″ artwork. Take a look at some photos from the opening below as well as the list of artists below and their “buddies.” Andrew Schoultz – Gianluca Franzese, Ben Venom – Megan Gorham, Brendan Monroe – Anders Oinonen, […]

Openings: “20 Pieces of Dreams” @ Giant Robot 2

A while back, before the current Post It 8 show (covered) that has taken over the walls of Giant Robot 2, a special show was put on at the gallery entitled 20 Pieces of Dreams. The group exhibition was curated by Mari Inukai and was meant to be in celebration of her daughter Sena’s 20th birthday, a coming of age event in Japanese culture. Included artists were many of Mari’s friends like Amy Sol, Audrey Kawasaki, Edwin Ushiro, Elizabeth Ito, Fumi Omori, Katsuya Terada, Kent Williams, Sean Chao, Stella Im Hultberg, Tessar […]
