Upcoming: “Giant Robot Biennale 3” @ Japanese American National Museum

Next Saturday night (September 23), the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles will be presenting Giant Robot Biennale 3, its third show (see 2009) in conjunction with Eric Nakamura (interviewed), the founder of Asian American pop culture purveyor Giant Robot. This year’s exhibition highlights the works of emerging artists Rob Sato, Deth P. Sun, Ako Castuera, Eishi Takaoka, Saelee Oh, Sean Chao, Albert Reyes, and Zach Gage, all with long ties to GR. Travis Louie for “Le Carnaval des Spectres” @ Artoyz

Take a look at these custom “Ghostly Stan” Skelve figures from Travis Louie (interviewed) that he painted for the upcoming Le Carnaval des Spectres group show at Artoyz in Paris opening on September 13th. Not much info on this latest figure to be released from KAWS. The new limited edition offering entitled Companion: Resting Place features his classic dissected character in a more relaxed sitting position. Look for these to drop soon on Kawsone and at OriginalFake. Discuss KAWS here.

Releases: Ron English – “American Depress” @ Kidrobot

Ron English (featured) recently created a new vinyl sculpture with toy maker Kidrobot for their ultra limited Kidrobot Black line. Entitled American Depress, the 12-inch figure depicts Ron’s version of a bloated Mickey Mouse ensnared in a Amex “Black Card” credit trap. Mr. English attended the launch event for a signing along with a meet and greet with fans at the KR’s New York location. Check out more photos below. Discuss Ron English here.

Releases: Parra x Kidrobot – “Pierced” Figure

On June 7th, Kidrobot will be releasing (in-store and online) a new figure from Dutch artist Parra entitled Pierced. The 10-inch vinyl sculpture is inspired by the melodramatic cover art of romance novels and based on imagery from his original silkscreen artwork. The entwined figures which demonstrate the simultaneous pain and pleasure that many experience while in love will set collectors back $150 and will be limited to an edition of 300. Via mashKULTURE.

Opening on May 26 (and running until Sept 16) at me Collectors Room Berlin is an exhibition featuring the collection of Selim Varol, who is known for being a part of the Toy Giants project, Toykio Cafe and Gallery, and Gallery Springmann.Varol. The initial silver version drop on Valentine’s Day last year and subsequent black version release sold out rapidly, but in about an hour, this year’s V-day cherry version will be available here.
